Sometimes when I see clips of Marco Rubio testifying before congress I get a little bit of a Michael Corleone's Senate appearance vibe.
It aint easy to find here in the Midwest...

The angle of the photo gives me this weird MC Escher effect.
Saw this in a reblog from someone I follow and was completely blown away.
These two performers from another planet are incredibly talented. Microtonal guitar/bass double-neck is sort of insane. All the pedal work and looping is really effective. And the drummer is so skilled at finding balance between driving and creating space for the sounds.
I hear most people say Math Rock and you can definitely hear the through line to King Crimson and early Yes. But also the Art Punk of Devo with the absurdism (but these two are much better technically). And Free Jazz with the microtones and polyrhythms.
Definitely not a joke band or an art project. I already bought my tickets for their December show at First Ave.
We have a good friend, Marc, who is from Holland. When he was growing up, his family had a "summer home" near Le Roux Bas in Southeast France (think very old, brick and stone cabin near a creek in a somewhat mountainous region). They've stayed friends with the family who bought the place 40 years ago and Marc and his wife invited us to go with them to stay there in September.
Our plan is to fly to Paris and be tourists there for four days (neither Susan nor I have been there). Then take the train to Lyon and drive the rest of the way to the place. Stay there for three days (no cell service, no wifi) and then return for one night in Paris before going flying home.
How much more effort will go into technology designed to keep us from having to interact with other humans?
Decent haul from the Mill City farmers' market this morning. It's still May so it's a small backpack day. Those salad turnips are a variety called Hakurei and they are very mild and sweet. We will be having sauteed radish and turnip greens for a few meals this week.
Not pictured: beautiful salad mix, two cheeses from Cosmic Wheel Creamery, and a small package of frozen lamb loin chops.

From another reel of the Super8 movies we made in 1979(ish).

Until modern times, people have relied on ritual practices to heal the wounds of culture, draw upon the renewing energies of nature and reju
I thought of @hthrrloooo when listening to this episode today because he starts out reading a poem by William Stafford called A Ritual to Read to Each Other. And he goes on to talk about the connection between poetry and ritual.
"And one of the things I want to say about ritual is it's kind of like a poem. William Stafford would write a poem every morning. The first word that would come to him when he woke up, he was in a kind of a meditative state, and then the first word that came would be the beginning of a poem. He wrote a poem each day that way. He understood that being a poet, when he was awake, he was awaking into the world of poetry and his task was to catch those things that were trying to become evident, that otherwise might not be present at all."
He later says "ritual is not about being seen but about being present.." and that is also connected to poetry, art, creativity.
Last night we got to see Robert Glasper's early show at the Dakota. He's here for a 6 show run over three days. Our musician friend John and his wife Penny sat in the booth with us and the seats were great.
He had what he called his OG Acoustic Trio with him plus a DJ: Glasper was on a grand piano. Vicente Archer was on double bass, Damion Reid on drums, and Jahi Sundance as. the DJ.
Amazing set. Kind of otherworldly where, if you let it happen, you can just completely lose yourself in the music. This is the fourth time we've seen him perform and this was new territory from his earlier recordings. Less DJ work (the DJ was doing a lot of atmospheric work and really emotional bits of other artists speaking: Nina Simone, David Bowie, etc.)
On the piano, as opposed to previous shows where he was on synths, you could hear really distinctive references to other keyboard players: Herbie Hancock for sure, Ahmad Jamal, Vince Guaraldi, and probably others I'm less familiar with.
A couple of interesting (to me) nuggets: First time I've ever witnessed a drum solo with brushes and I couldn't believe how moving that was. One of the bass lines was very similar to the bass line in Rush's Tom Sawyer which was wild.
Damn. Just heard that Rob Base passed away last week. I loved this song from the first time I heard it in a dance club in the late 80s.
In 1979(ish) my best friend Paul and I saved up our money and bought a Super8 camera. It has the ability to shoot frame by frame so we created a green clay character named George the Blob and shot a few movies mixing stop motion and live action. Mostly in Paul's house because he had better props (Playmobil, etc.).
I recently had the 6 old spools of film converted to digital and this one was in the group. There's another one that is a take on Wizard of Oz and it includes a few graphics from Paul's Commodore64 but it needs some editing.
Definitely worth three minutes of your time. Especially for the trip down memory lane with all the product placement (Like Cola!).

Beautiful night last night. GLP was home because he has a break between camp sessions. Carrie came over because she's essentially part of the family. I peeled, deveined, and grilled a bunch of shrimp and served it with mango salsa, and tortilla chips.
We've got guests coming in mid-June and late-June so we spent the weekend on back yard beautification. Some plants in the garden, several pots for the backyard patio, mulching, getting the zinnias in the garden box bordering the patio on top of the garage. It all felt good and we still have a lot to do.
