EXPERIMENTAL PRODUCTS - “GLOWING IN THE DARK”
I’m not normally a huge fan of songs this long, but with a beat like this, who can refuse? Add some bright synth and an eerie, haunting narrative like this one and I’d be willing to forgive way more than I even have to. Electro-disco underdogs Experimental Products hailed from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, a city with some great art museums and a low cost of living, but not a whole lot of other great electronic musicians, aside from David Lynch. It’s where I live, though, which is another thing that makes me quite fond of “Glowing in the Dark.”

EXPERIMENTAL PRODUCTS - “WORK THAT BEAT”
For quite some time, this was a very rare and sought-after track, only available with a promotional flexi-disc that came with an issue of Philadelphia music magazine Terminal! in 1984. A solid slice of electronic disco that oscillates and mesmerizes, before finishing with a terse “rap” portion and a stately vocoder intonation of its title. (Well, I think it sounds closer to “work the beat” than “work that beat,” but it’s an early vocoder after all.) Spacey and playful, it doesn’t necessarily live up to the suggestion of “experimental” music that you might take away from the name...but that doesn’t make it any less of a gem.
