Washer - Dog Go Bark
my very super talented sister made this
Take a look at all the great new releases we’re catching up on this week!! There’s so many great ones hitting the shelves so let’s run through a few of my recommendations for this weeks haul: 1. Vampire Weekend - Father of The Bride The first album in years from VW. It’s definitely a different speed than what you all are used to. But will be an important album in their discography. 2. Pile - Green & Grey If you’ve even come within ten feet of the store you’ve probably heard me ramble about this band. Pile is by far the band that has meant the most to me the last couple years. It’s impossible to describe so just go listen! 3. Big Thief - U.F.O.F. Big Thief have put out some of the most beautifully written albums the last few years. It’s incredibly personal and raw and I can’t wait to spend a year straight listening to this one. 4. Mac Demarco - Here Comes the Cowboy If you like Mac, I’m gonna guess this one will still be up your alley. From the singles released so far it’s right in that Mac comfort zone. But seriously check out some of the insane music videos that have come out recently But also noteworthy is the new Quelle Chris, billy woods, Jamila Woods, Charly Bliss, Tim Hecker.... It’s a loaded week here filled with some of my highest recs I can rec.. so come down and grab one last new record before leaving town for the summer! See You Soon!! . . . . #vampireweekend #pile #explodinginsound #bigthief #charlybliss #macdemarco #quellechris #billywoods #timhecker #rap #electronic #experimentalmusic #hiphop #indie #alternative #outkast #cranberries #supportyourlocalrecordstore #seeyoucdandvinyl #vinyl #record #records #recordcollector #recordcollection #uiuc #uofi #vinylrecords #vinylcollector #vinylcommunity #vinylcollection #nowspinning (at See You CD & Vinyl) https://www.instagram.com/p/BxOXAtcJqQ3/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=zitjq429z4v7
[(almost!)RELEASE DAY!] Pile - Green and Gray
@pilemusic @explodinginsound @kevin.s.mcmahon @lindsey_boss (artwork) #pilemusic #pile #explodinginsound Super exciting news! Exploding in Sound Records has posted the brand new Pile - Green and Gray album in its entirety on their page! I’ve posted the link below and I implore you to go give it a listen, you’ve got nothing to lose. And when you realize how amazing it is, grab one of those vinyl copies while they still have em. I absolutely love mine and I’ve actually gotten a bit behind on my reviews this week because I keep playing it. I’ve also been fortunate enough to have a chance to pick Rick Maguire’s brain about the album, the tour, his record collection, and of course that scorcher of a track about Stephen Miller. Read it below!
INTERVIEW:
Pile is a band that is tough to nail down, genre-wise, because you've evolved quite a bit since the early days. Tell us a little bit about what to expect from your upcoming album "Green and Grey": I guess more of the same in terms of attempting genre evasion. Generally, I'd say it's just a rock record, though. I initially intended the record to be generally heavier than our previous releases but some really mellow and subdued songs snuck their way on there. On the whole, I'd say that it pushes the poles between our loudest and our quietest stuff further apart. I can't stop listening to your new track, "The Soft Hands of Stephen Miller", because it's so bold, so forceful, and so brutal in a way I've never heard from Pile before! Aside from seemingly obvious reasons, what made you choose him as the target of his own song?: Kind of like how saying a word over and over can lose its meaning, it sometimes starts to feel repetitive and ineffective talking about how awful Trump is. There are plenty of other people near him whose reprehensible behavior should be talked about too, I think. Our fans and followers are almost exclusively vinyl record collectors and we love getting in the weeds with all of the details about pressings. Anything interesting or exciting we should know about the vinyl release? This is our longest record at just under an hour so we decided to put it on 2 LPs that should be spun at 45rpm. It's a matte print gatefold with a poster and I think it's our best looking and sounding one yet. Most, if not all, of your releases have been pressed to vinyl, which is great! What about the format do you love so much? I'd be lying if I said it wasn't largely a market dictated decision. But I do like how deliberate listening to an LP is, it's not as passive as other formats can be. I also like that the artwork is larger. Overall, LPs demand greater attention and are more engaging. It's exciting to see that you worked with Kevin S. McMahon for the production of this album as he's had his hand in some real landmark albums from the past decade. What was it like sharing production roles with Kevin on this album? We threw a lot of instruments at these songs and Kevin was very creative and tasteful with how he sculpted that raw material into a complete cohesive piece. You're kicking off a big tour pretty much immediately after the release date. What are you looking forward to most when you're out on the road? We're traveling with a front of house engineer for the first time, so I'm very excited about the consistency of (ideally) sounding really good each night. I'm assuming you're a vinyl collector, so indulge us: 1) What is your all-time favorite record: Of ones I've owned, I'd say End Hits by Fugazi 2) What is your white whale record you still haven't found: First pressing of Deceit by This Heat 3) What is an oddball record you think we should give a chance?: Guerilla Toss - Jeffrey Johnson https://explodinginsoundrecords.bandcamp.com/album/green-and-gray https://www.instagram.com/p/Bw9x8zQJDpI/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=449uetpirorr
[PRE-RELEASE] Pile - Green and Grey
@pilemusic @explodinginsound @kevin.s.mcmahon @lindsey_boss (artwork) #pilemusic #pile #explodinginsound Pile is a band that I’ve loved for many years and is one of the hardest bands I’ve ever tried to categorize (I think that’s the point). I would love to be able to tell you “you’ll love Pile if you love _____” but this is a band that can switch genres as quickly as tracks chance. On this upcoming release titled “Green and Gray”, the band has written songs that can swing from sad, acoustic ballads to super abrasive and screamy anti-Stephen Miller noise-rock taunts that sound like they’ve channeled the very essence of David Yow if he was super pissed and attending a protest. The second half of the album has a touch more of the heaviness, but even at their loudest, Pile has found a way to use restraint and balance in a way that so many of their contemporaries don’t. If you really have to have a genre, you’ll hear some post-punk, some almost-but-not-quite psych chord progressions, and definitely some could-be-mathrock-but-isn’t-pretentious rhythmic structures. The pressing itself is also fantastic and nice and crispy clear just like I like. They worked with Kevin S. McMahon on the production of this piece and fans of his previous work will pick up on his style here too. I scored a copy of the clear pressing but there are still black AND clear copies left for pre-order (but you know those clear ones are gonna sell out). They included a very cool poster with artwork by @lindsey_boss and as you can see, my cat loves it too. I’m going to run a second feature about this album and band next Friday May 3rd on their release date that will include an exclusive interview with Rick Maguire so keep your eyes peeled for that, too! In the meantime, go pre-order the vinyl: http://www.explodinginsoundrecords.com/products/637179-pile-green-and-gray https://www.instagram.com/p/BwuaUeCgavn/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1ecrlkmcqz5pc
