Turns out that the lighting and my position were not good. My photos of the flyover are disappointingly bad. ⛪ #ottcity #myottawa #exploreottawa . Experiencing Ottawa during the time of the #COVID pandemic and #socialdistancing is a bizarrely disassociating experience. I am acutely aware of the differences – the subtle and not so subtle features that distinguish this place from all others – some are unexpected while others are just totally foreign. The differences are both fascinating and disconcerting. In unfamiliar territory you cannot help but miss the familiar. One of the regional differences that I came across almost immediately is the display of religious iconography in people's front yards. During my neiborhood walks I would come across this statues for frequently that I would #walkamoungthemarys. . As I move into my third month in Ottawa – I know this place primarily though my observations as we continue to socially distance (#Day53). I peer out from my streetside vantage with almost no social context what-so-ever. It is an oddly disassociating experience. . I watch the cats sometimes as they try to escape out the front door – presumably to find their way "home". To a cat the world is constrained to whatever small area their imaginations are capable of grappling with. I have no doubt that in their cat-mind it is possible to make their way "home". All our memories are still very close and vivid – and we miss it. (⚠️ not your usual happy post) Now that the frenetic pace of the move has past, I am able to experience more. This weekend I managed explore the local area. Everything is really hard right now. The homesickness has hit hard. Walking through the snow and I reflected on how my story isn't unique. It is not even unique in my own life. There are many people who have had to leave their homes for a better life elsewhere. But what is often overlooked is the desperation and heartbreak that often accompanies this decision. "no one leaves home unless home is the mouth of a shark." — Warsan Shire A reluctant economic migrant ... the victim of systemic inequality ... a climate change refugee ... collateral dramage resulting from stupid economic policies or corrupt politics ... If anything, the lesson that Alberta teaches is how quickly things can go from boom to bust. You never think it will happen to you ... until it does. And despite having the resources, relationships, experience, and skills that made me welcome in my new city .. the sucker punch known as homesickness sneaks up on you and bawls you over with all the stages of grief. My heart longs for home ... for the famililiar. This is a heaviness that you carry with you into your new life. Surrounded by the unrelenting and unsettling strangeness of this new place ... I am aware that my privilege has allowed me to have a relatively soft landing. A good job & a nice place to live. I can't imagine what its like for those who find themselves at this point in the journey ... living in a detention center ... separated from family ... accused of being drug dealers, gangs, or rapists ... diseases... all the while grieving the belonging of home ... holding on to both grief and hope with both hands.
