Today in #history: #OTD, December 30, 1930, Colonial National Monument in #Virginia was established. On June 5, 1936, it was redesignated @colonialnhp and includes Historic Jamestowne and Yorktown Battlefield. These two sites are connected by the scenic 23-mile Colonial Parkway. From Jamestown to Yorktown, this park interprets America’s beginnings from an English colony in 1607 to an independent nation in 1781. Pictured is the interior of the Jamestown church tower, the only above-ground 17th-century structure still standing at Jamestown. #va #SpreadTheHistory #vahistory #FindYourPark #nps #nps103 #OptOutside #exploreva #nationalparks #nationalparkservice #goparks #americanhistory #nationalparkgeek #travelblog #travelblogger #explore #blog #blogger #jamestown #jamestownva #yorktownva #colonialnhp (at Historic Jamestowne) https://www.instagram.com/p/B6t8uoWH8O2/?igshid=3vpuo5duyu8b

Happy Washington's Birthday (observed), also known as #PresidentsDay! This is a photo of the outline of the plantation house of Augustine Washington and his second wife, Mary Ball, at @georgewashingtonbirthplacenm in Westmoreland County, #Virginia. George Washington was born here on February 22, 1732 and lived here until age three. The original birthplace burned down in a fire on Christmas Day 1779 and never rebuilt. A memorial house (the #brick house in the background) was built in 1931 to represent the original birthplace and educate about the period's history. This #NationalMonument was established January 23, 1930. The park and Memorial House were opened by the @NationalParkService in 1932, on the 200th anniversary of George Washington's birth. #va #SpreadTheHistory #vahistory #FindYourPark #nps #nps103 #OptOutside #exploreva #nationalparks #nationalparkservice #goparks #americanhistory #nationalparkgeek #travelblog #travelblogger #explore #blog #blogger #georgewashington #georgewashingtonbirthplace #potus1 #potus #archaeology #WestmorelandCounty #smallparksaturday (at George Washington Birthplace Monument, Potomac Shore) https://www.instagram.com/p/B8sNJDOnfY6/?igshid=1hkvq22ksma56
The magazine at @colonialwmsburg in #Virginia. This building was constructed in 1715 as storage for the arms and ammunition dispatched from London for the defense of the colony. Its walls are approximately two feet thick. Colonial Williamsburg restored the structure in 1934 and 1935. #va #vahistory #SpreadTheHistory #historygirl #colonialwilliamsburg #williamsburg #williamsburgva #architecture #archi_ologie #octagonstyle #exploreva #travelblog #travelblogger #explore #blog #blogger #ushistory #americanhistory #historictriangle #loveva #virginiaisforlovers #magazine #brick #brickporn #visitwilliamsburg #findyourfunwmbg (at The Magazine At Colonial Williamsburg) https://www.instagram.com/p/BzCJm9AHocn/?igshid=176tz8w7dgktu
The Nelson House in Yorktown, #Virginia part of @colonialnhp. The house was built circa 1730 by Thomas Nelson. It was later home to Thomas' grandson, Thomas Nelson, Jr. (1738 - 1789), Yorktown's most famous son and one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. Nelson's devotion to the patriot cause during the #AmericanRevolution contributed significantly to the creation of the United States. In June 1781, he was elected the third governor of Virginia. The Nelson House is one of the finest examples of early #Georgian architecture in Virginia and maintains much of its original architectural fabric. The Nelson family retained ownership of the house until 1908. In 1968, the @NationalParkService purchased the house and restored it to its eighteenth century appearance. #va #SpreadTheHistory #vahistory #FindYourPark #nps #nps102 #OptOutside #exploreva #nationalparks #nationalparkservice #goparks #americanhistory #nationalparkgeek #travelblog #travelblogger #explore #blog #blogger #yorktownva #colonialnhp #nationalhistoricpark #nelsonhouse #oldhouselove #architecture #archi_ologie (at Yorktown, Va.) https://www.instagram.com/p/BwIpDRdneFu/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1twtl4sdjhkyu
