I really liked the ‘Wired’ article about Bronies. I’ve heard about a lot of odd fan based things, but this one definitely left me with a lot of questions that I would love to ask a true Brony. I liked that the article explores topics in masculinity rather than framing the story in an obscure or negative way. I learned a lot about this in my “Gender, Race and Class in the Media” course that I took last semester. One of the biggest take aways I had from that class was that gender is a social construction, which means it is completely man made. In reality, gender is fluid. Everyone has some qualities that are labeled ‘masculine’ and everyone has some qualities that are labeled ‘feminine.’ The Bronies fan groups enable men to not only meet people with similar interests, but also create a dialogue about traditional masculinity by essentially shattering it. However, I would be interested to find out what draws these men to that particular show since there are so many others that are similar and teach the same values.
