Reports of our demise might have been slightly exaggerated, but the departure of Simon Chong is 100% true. Sadly, his prodigious animating talents caught the eye of Hollywood bigwigs, and no amount of promises of being paid in real money or upgrading his Etch-a-Sketch could convince him not to flee 5,400 miles across the world to escape our clutches. Were we going to let him flee without recording a goodbye podcast? Were we fork. So, we took our mics out of hibernation for one last huzzah as the awesome foursome and put together this special show. (‘Special’ in this instance means poorly prepared.) Find out more about what Simon will be up to in California, hear a special story from a 9 year-old Chong, listen to his horrified reaction to our special parting gift, and catch our reactions to your tributes at our premature funeral. It’s going to get emotional.
I was on the Explosive Alan podcast. It's here if you fancy a listen without fiddling about with itunes.
Sometimes they let me out of the office - and when they do, I do things like go on Homework, a show made by Explosive Alan Productions.
Follow Friday - Explosive Alan
For my first installment of Follow Friday I would like to talk a bit about the gaming website, Explosive Alan. Explosive Alan were formed last year by former Inside Xbox staff Dan “MrPointyHead” Maher, Gareth Wild and Ashley “SlapDashAsh” Denton and is one of the best places to go for gaming related content if you’re feeling a bit silly (or not).
Some of you may remember Dan as being one of the faces of Inside Xbox which was tragically taken away from us by Microsoft last year in what I like to call a “dick move”. Inside Xbox was something I would tune into regularly simply because of Dan and his co-host Andy’s gung-ho attitude to what they were doing. I got the impression they loved doing what they did but were obviously being held back by Microsoft restrictions. Because of Inside Xbox being cancelled (and being replaced by ads no less) Dan, Gareth, Ash and many others were made redundant, a horrible waste of frankly amazing talent. But these guys were having none of it and set out to start anew. Setting up a Kickstarter for a mystery project they dubbed “Project Possum” and which is now their new series named Thank You For Playing (which I am bloody looking forward to), the guys received universal support for what they were trying to accomplish (and I was there among the supporters). Thus, Explosive Alan was born.
What are they trying to accomplish you may ask? Well… instead of trying to compete with other big name gaming media companies they’re making things more personal for their members, getting them involved in various challenges (not just throwing a game or other novelty some lucky commenters way every now and again) and in general just having fun by making brilliant content that has made me smile on more than one occasion such as their Wii U ad mock up, their sneak peak at the completely legitimate first DLC for Far Cry 3 and their podcast titled Homework.
In a world where gaming media outlets are bound and tied to guidelines and restrictions on what they can and can’t do and what they can and can’t publish (which Explosive Alan voiced in their Project Possum debut video), these guys take those guidelines and restrictions and throw them out of a third story window into morning rush hour traffic. This is something the gaming media NEEDS in this day and age. People like Dan, Gareth and Ash who aren’t afraid to say “No!” to what the big shots are calling. By being independent they have shown that great content can be produced in waves and droves.
They’re my first honourary “Follow Friday” article because they were some of the people who made me WANT to get into games journalism and start my journey in the first place with their no holds barred approach.
They fought through a difficult time after being made redundant and came out bigger and better because of it.
It should be your god given duty to sign up on their website at explosivealan.com, follow them on Twitter @Explosive_Alan and also follow Dan (@MrPointyHead), Gareth (@GarethWild) and Ash (@SlapDashAsh) because these chaps deserve every bit of recognition for their work.
