The renunciation cycle - Le cirque renoncé - A prova positiva

My renunciation paintings emerged in two cycles – although I recently reworked the First Renunciation Cycle completely in egg tempera because the original watercolor paintings no longer seemed to me to correspond to the feelings I wish to express and be considered by the informed observer. 

Moved by the melancholic saudade  of Portuguese fado music, many years ago, I began to examine the assertion by philosophers of the epicurean hedonist tradition that our greatest good is reason. That just didn’t seem to match with my rather expressionistic artistic inclinations. Like many artists, writers and thinkers before me, I came to the conclusion that our greatest good is our ability to feel. And to be able to recognize, portray and convey those feelings. 

Suffering, pain, humiliation, unfulfilled desire, restless longing, bitterness and disappointment are some of the powerful emotions that have run through me. They caused bewilderment and turmoil. At length, however, also came joy, contentment, acceptance, warmth, wonder, and love.
