I have been a fan of The Lemonheads ever since I saw them on The Word playing a cover of Simon and Garfunkels Mrs Robinson. Since then I have seen them twice. This is the second time I have seen Evan Dando solo (the last time being when he played 2003 Leeds Festival in support of Baby I'm Bored.)

My initial plan was to go to Leeds and combine the gig with a city break. However the tickets sold out and I decided to have go to Stoke. When i got the the venue Mr Dando himself was outside on a skateboard! He obliged me with a selfie.

The gig itself was shambolic and chaotic but entertaining. It is obvious that his voice is not what it was and whilst he does claim to be "clean" his behaviour was at time erratic. However he was in a room of die hard fans who lapped it up. He even finished in the middle of the crowd singing Frank Mills acapella.

I feel I must say a few words about the venue. The sound was excellent, the beer reasonably priced (£5.50 for a pint of Beavertown Neck Oil) and the staff friendly. I would go to see a band at The Sugarmill again.

Development of my Practice - Stepping Outside of my Comfort Zone

I don't usually shoot in shot light, on an overcast day. Usually, when the sun is high in the sky, contrast, deep shadows and extremely bright highlights, is when I choose to shoot. Although, I've recently discovered what a challenge sunlight poses, both in practice out in the field and during post.

Without realising before, I'm trying to consider how to expose for equal amount of detail in the shadows and highlights, most of the time I'm in a position of either exposing for the shadows or the highlights, whichever, I usually loose detail in the foreground or little areas of detail, which is just as difficult as trying to rescue some of blown out highlights from complete oblivion.

Following a bit of research, I decided to venture out and photograph on an overcast day, using a tri-pod, live-view, exposure compensation and the blur-focus method, the result of this much slower, considered process towards my landscape photography practice is the image above.

I'm quite pleased with it as a first attempt, the aim of using exposure compensation was to lighten the shadows in the foreground to bring out a bit of extra detail of the tree and space between the branches, without sacrificing detail of the highlights in the background, which creates a minimalist, white background, allowing the autumnal colours of the leaves to stand out, to pop out from the frame.

I love to experiment with a films capabilities. As should also be obvious, I love taking shots in low light settings using either high iso, or fast films. I also like to push films and see what I results.

Earlier this year I managed to get hiold of some Cinestill 800T for a reasonable price. If an 800 iso film is pushed by two stops it can be shot as if it is 3200 iso! Not so long ago these capabilities would have been unheard of. I had quite a bit of fun experimenting and will be on the lookout for more such rolls.

I have used this technique many times. I just seem to like doing it. I get a high iso film (or one I can push as is the case here) attach a 50mm prime to the F65 and see that happens.

There is something about taking photos in the dark that I quite like. I love seeing the glow of electric lights against the dark in a street scene and how shallow depth of field affects the composition.

Shakespeare North Playhouse, Prescot. Nikon F65. Expired Truprint 200 iso shot at 800 iso.

According to their website the Shakespeare North Playhouse is "inspired by Prescot’s historic connections to William Shakespeare and a real love of storytelling." The main auditorium is a timber framed and holds 470. The rather impressive building also boasts a studio theatre and a "performance garden."

I often shoot at high ISO settings when using my digital SLR. This is because I photograph a lot of live bands and venues always stipulate "NO FLASH." This is understandable as musicians do not like to be blinded whilst playing.

This made me think. I could put a 400 ISO film in my Nikon and shoot it at 1600 ISO. As some films "push" better than others I decided to shoot a good quality film for this experiment, namely Ilford HP5.

New Quay in West Wales (NOT Newquay in Cornwall) is a part of the world I am fortunate enough to be very familiar with. I spent many school holidays here and visit once a year with the rest of the family.

When I arrived this year I had a few shots left in my Nikon F65 and went to the front to use them up as I was keen to load other films get shooting.
