globe in morning lane test shoot
we conducted our first test shoot in an old fashioned pub called the ‘globe in morning lane’ in hackney central. It is a pub that has a comedy, jazz/blues vibe that would be perfect for recreating our scene from blue velvet. It has a stage with red curtains in the background. The old fashioned vibe to the pub will really help re-create our narrative, meaning we could even include people in the foreground, guests, to add to the story of the image
it would be interesting to include a suspicious looking guy on the table on the right hand side, before the stage, adding some of the storyline from blue velvet. This is what is great about the pub, as we have a natural location setting that will help us add more of the narrative into one shot
we managed to somewhat get the correct exposure on the stage, however, the blue on one of the lights wouldn’t come out strong enough, meaning we would definitely need more/darker blue gels for the lights. We felt as though we may need another light near where the camera stands, to enhance the spotlight from a better angle than from the side of the shot. Overall, the final product from today’s shoot has helped show us what else we need to create the blue velvet effect. Definitely a stronger blue light, and a spotlight. It was a good day in teaching us how the external flash works, even though we had issues with the light meter readings. We eventually got there, but this showed us how many things can go wrong and how much time we would probably need for our final shoot
we ran into a few problems with this particular set up in the pub, one being that the gold bars in front of the stage were a bit distracting and took some of the attraction away from the image. It was also, on such a ‘small’ stage, hard to get the lights far away enough, and out of shot, enough to correctly expose the image. The guy who owned the pub, also only wanted to allow us a couple of hours in the morning, for our final shoot, to take the photographs, which would definitely not be enough time and we would be working too much under pressure. This is a real shame as the pub is perfect for re-creating an old skool feel that is captured in the blue velvet film
