March Madness Extra Cred,yoooo
Article #1: Economic Impacts
-Personal gain from office bets and such
-Host cities gaining publicity because of their city's T.V. exposure ( Obama attending Dayton with British Prime Minister= HELLA PUBLICITY)
-Host cities for NCAA tourn. expected to gain.. "$40 [million] to $80 million of economic impact during tournament week" through local businesses
- Large groups of people -Hotels and sales tax= $$$$$$
“You want to have a bunch of people to come in that wouldn’t normally come in, and spend a lot of money in the city that wouldn’t normally get spent.”
On the other hand, some say that this is not a guaranteed economic boost, and could be the opposite
- Possibly less economic activity in restaurants, malls, etc..
-Some people see that March Madness is in town, and as a result don't come because they don't want to deal with crowds and traffic
- Bad effect on economy when people take off work for devotion to sports team
Article II:
-$548 million from TV rights and an additional $40 million from ticket sales and sponsorships, together representing 96% of all NCAA revenue
-schools loose tons during March Madness- They make some revenue, but there operating costs usually trump what they make by a ridiculous amount
-Schools also spend lots of money trying to attract the best high-school players during the recruitment process. In addition, they spend as much as 15 million on high quality arenas, training facilities with luxury suites and locker rooms, academic tutoring facilities, and hire coaches with a reputation for sending an occasional player to the NBA.
