The Spiritualist Murder/suicide: Rev Mark Mata was a psychic medium, running his own version of a New Age Christian ministry. He told his followers that God had given him the gift of clairvoyance during the passing of Pope John Paul II in 2005. The Fire of The St. Ferdinand de Halifax Asylum: On December 31st of 1917, a fire of unknown origin reduced the iscolated Saint Ferdinand de Halifax asylum, for mentally handicapped girls, to ashes. The small staff of nuns, from the Quebec Sisters of Charity, struggled to rescue the 180 screaming patients from their secured rooms as flames consumed them. Some of the girls were violent, others were hysterical with terror, and still others rushed toward the bright flames with fascination. In the end, it was amazing that only 45 girls perished. The Death of Rasputin: On December 30th of 1916, the court of the last Tsar of the Russian Empire took extreme measures to eliminate Grigori Rasputin. The Death of Dian Fossey: On December 27th of 1985, the famed primatologist, and anthropologist, Dian Fossey was murdered. She had been at war with Rwandan poachers for years, who were in the business of killing and trafficking the endangered mountain Gorillas that she had so loved and committed her life's work to. Dian was discovered beaten to death with a fatal blow to her head having been delivered with a machete. Rwandan courts later convicted one of the trackers on her team, who she had fired after suspicions of his ties to covertly assisting poachers came to her attention. His name is Wayne McGuire, and he avoided prosecution by returning to the United States, where no extradition treaties would send him back to face charges. The Christmas Disco Inferno: On December 25th of 2000, a shopping center in Luoyang, China, was being used for a holiday disco event. The lower sections of the building were undergoing construction, and as a result, a fire started in the basement. It went totally unnoticed until it was too late. Elevators lost power, boxes of merchandise blocked doors, and black smoke obliterated escape routes. The Andover Incident: On December 24th of 1171, a Priest was in the middle of performing his Christmas Eve sermon to a crowded church, in Andover, Hants, England. The parishioners gasped when all the candles in the chapel extinguished themselves simultaneously. The Solar Temple Murder/Suicides: On December 23rd of 1995, the bodies of 16 members of The Order of the Solar Temple Cult were discovered arranged in a star formation, deep in the woods of the French Alps.
