The Death of Dian Fossey: On December 27th of 1985, the famed primatologist, and anthropologist, Dian Fossey was murdered. She had been at war with Rwandan poachers for years, who were in the business of killing and trafficking the endangered mountain Gorillas that she had so loved and committed her life's work to. Dian was discovered beaten to death with a fatal blow to her head having been delivered with a machete. Rwandan courts later convicted one of the trackers on her team, who she had fired after suspicions of his ties to covertly assisting poachers came to her attention. His name is Wayne McGuire, and he avoided prosecution by returning to the United States, where no extradition treaties would send him back to face charges. The Deadly Fog: On December 4th of 1954, a heavy blanket of smog began to engulf London, England. Londoners were accustomed to fog, but this turned out to be something quite different. As they left their homes to go about their daily business in the murky streets, they started stumbling over dead bodies... as they then tried to return to the safety of their own homes, many found themselves struck breathless, and surcoming to the deadly smog themselves. The lethal fog remained firmly in place for 4 days solid. Conservative estimates place the number of dead at 4,000 but hospital records covering the following month link the fog to as many as 8,000 of the city's populace dying. In the aftermath of the smog's death toll, the British government passed more stingent regulations on air pollution, and the use of unrefined coal in homes. The Bhopal Disaster: On December 3rd of 1984, the Union Carbide pesticide plant, located in a slum of Bhopal, India released a mammoth cloud of deadly methyl isocyanate. The gas killed 4,000 people instantly, and injured an additional 200,000 others... many of who were permanently blinded and disabled. The Mystery Lions of Arkansas: On September 20th of 2002, 4 adult Lions, of mysterious species and origin, were shot in forests of Quitman, Arkansas. They reportedly had full lions manes, with thich dark brown fur. The public was outraged, assuming that these lions had escaped from the collection of an owner of exotic animals, or zoo... but the investigating officer, Sheriff Dudley Lemon publicly afirmed that he had traced every known large cat in the state, and none were found to be missing. Killer Bees & Colony Collapse: On September 4th of 1991, government officials warned that Africanized Honey Bees were a serious environmental problem, which they were actively researching cures for. The bees were moving up into Texas from Mexico, and predictions estimated that within two years of that date, killer bees would have established firm strongholds of colonization in the southern United States. By 1997, independant scientists noticed the first huge decline in bee populations. Invasion of The Green Hell: On August 11th of 1876, Kudzu was first introduced to the United States . This vine originates in mountainous region of Japan, where winter cold kills it annually to maintain a balanced ecosystem. However, it now is estimated to grow over 150,000 acres a year. As an invasive plant, it chokes out and kills every other plant in its path, leaving nothing but dead trees that are covered in a thick carpet of green. It costs $6 million a year to simply hold it at bay. The Wormy Water of Winfree: On July 29th of 2015, residents of the small Texas town of Old River Winfree were wondering what was writhing in their water... Worms! The Political Gorilla Massacre: On July 25th of 2007, rebels went on a rampage killing the endangered gorillas of Virunga National Park in the Congo. These gorillas were not killed by poachers for the bushmeat black market. No, they were murdered in an attempt to bring international shame upon the Congolese authorities and thereby divide government forces in the region.
