favorite thing about them
cute character design mostly. obviously he’s extremely intelligent but i have my fair share of that with L and Light so what makes Near stand out to me is the fluffiness of his design and how adorable he looks. i love that there’s no other character out there who holds a remarkable similarity to him, making him quite unique. i’m not autistic myself but i see him being resonated with a lot by the autistic community and it brings me peace because i love it when others are comfortable with a character and use him for self-care and i can associate to that too, and it makes me happy that we share the same fandom when it comes to that. another thing i like about him is how much he cares. he cares about his team and he holds a humane trait to him we don’t see in L as much, and it makes him different because caring suits him more. i also love his name, haha.
least favorite thing about them
i really hated it when he said Light was nothing but a murderer because that line is just very false to me and a completely wrong interpretation of Light and i hate that he made it seem like he was in a position to judge him without really knowing him in a way that L didn’t do at all; even when he was 100% convinced Light was Kira and wanted him to be Kira, he still respected Light’s worth and intelligence and found him a respectable opponent, while Near seemed to disrespect Light most of the time and to degrade him, or ‘drag’ him in ways that were fun to read, but he just didn’t give any personal worth to him as a human being and wasn’t at all curious about him as a person. it’s understandable of course because they only met once, after which Light died, and i’m not saying Near wouldn’t have the capacity to get to know Light in an AU, and i’m not saying that this is unfounded, it’s just something i don’t like personally.

L/Near. i also can’t stand Mello/Near but would tolerate some very superficial platonic stuff maybe, though most of the time i’m not interested enough in it to hate it. it used to be my #1 NOTP before i realized L/Near makes me retch and practically gives the same vibes as incest to me, i just can’t picture it at all. also Near/Sayu is for some reason A Ship that i don’t understand at all
when he hears random noises coming from outside in the middle of the night, he tells rester to stay in the main room with him until he’s also gone to sleep.
i don’t even know if this is unpopular but it doesn’t make sense at all to me that moon river makes more sense to some people canonically than lawlight does? preferences are entirely personal but thinking moon river has more canon basis than lawlight is something i disagree with obviously cuz lawlight had tons of shippy moments while Near only hated Light’s guts in canon and nothing else, he and Light unfortunately didn’t share a personal life together and weren’t as close as Light and L have been (chained together, etc). i also don’t think that Near came to strictly replace L and i don’t like it when not much exploration to his character is given beyond just carrying L’s name and literally only filling in for L. i prefer to read him as an independent character with distinguishing traits, even when he’s technically not one of my faves, i still respect him enough to not think of him as merely an L duplicate.
