maaaaan this sociology of medicine course is driving me insane. menopause was overly medicalised based on studies done on a limited number of women (many of whom's symptoms were because undiagnosed chronic conditions and falsely attributed to menopause) leading to doctors prescribing HRT to virtually every menopausal woman in the 50's-70's in the USA whether they needed it or not and when feminist groups started protesting there was fierce backlash from the pharmaceutical companies and the medical establishment saying menopause was an "estrogen deficiency similar to diabetes".

and now it's the same goddamn HRT they were distributing like tic-tacs to menopausal women who did not want them that they're denying trans women because it's too "dangerous".
