Hey, i have a quick question!

I have an OC who doesn’t talk and uses sign language. Her vocal chords are fucked up, and she doesn’t like how her voice sounds, but she’s fully able to talk/make sounds if she so pleases.

Me and my friend came up with an AU that she’s in, which almost completely changes her story (except for the fucked-up vocal chords) and her personality. I was thinking that maybe, with the personality and backstory change, she’d use her voice a lot more often and only sign sometimes, as opposed to all the time.

Would this be bad, even if her mutism is a full choice?

(Sry if anything doesn’t make sense btw. If anything needs elaboration, I’m fully willing to explain)

It is your OC so you can do whatever you want! You're not erasing disability by changing your own character.

I will note--depending on what you mean by "fucked up", your character may have a hard time consistently speaking. Many vocal cord injuries cause pain to talk a lot, loudly, and/or for long periods of time.

(And more a personal pet peeve, but mute/non-speaking hearing characters are way over-represented in the world of signing characters, so it would be really nice to see some signers who are actually Deaf.)

he plays the guitar, notably!!! he doesn't own one- but his best friend had one in her house and he learned as a young kid, which eventually led to her letting him have it at his house (though, he still refers to it as "Tere's guitar" despite having it for what like, two years now)
