Her eyes.
Always staring at something. Someone. Somewhere. Observing the sky, people, her art. Captivated, entranced, staring always. Captivating. Entrancing. Wondering. Shining brown spheres full of questions and secrets and wanting, struck with chocolate crypts of pure interest.
So many unspoken questions writhing behind the very small percentage of them that was asked. I understood better than anyone the amount of energy and passion that lay within her, but the force behind all of the emotions tangled up in her eyes sometimes took me off guard.
Some people say that eyes are the windows to the soul. I’ve found, in this case at least, that they’re more of a reflection. Her eyes were the same as her. Bright and warm and shining. Nearly blending in with her skin and her brown brows and caramel hair. A clearing in the center of her world of trees. Not standing out extremely, but so very intriguing. Be careful not to look too close, or you’ll never look away.
Just like her.
I always found it particularly interesting the way she stares. If she’s happy, her gaze is open and full. Wide eyes with dilated pupils. Her eyebrows arch, the corners of her eyes crease and her eyes narrow, and a smile spreads across his face. When watching, her eyes narrow in a different way. They become invasive and shattering. A single brow raises and a slight curiosity pulls at her lips. There’s dozens of expressions I’ve seen in the years I’ve known him, as her best friend and classmate. I couldn’t tell you how often she makes those faces or when they’re triggered, but I could talk for years about how they make me feel. I could dissect those facial expressions to the bone and feel my heart crack more over every part of them. Every. Single. Expression.
Especially one.
Lately, I’ve longed for a new expression. I’ve never seen anything like it, but I know what she would look like with it smeared across her face. Eyelids narrowed in a smile, lips tweaked in a teasing manner, eyes soft and warm and welcoming.
It’s sad; this stare doesn’t fit any emotion she’s ever expressed. It truly is strange that I want to see it so badly. But what started it? Why am I yearning so deeply for it, determined to crack the shell of her emotions and spill out the truth of what intent lies behind those eyes?
And how can I coerce those celestial eyes to never leave mine?
