Hey, so I was wondering where one would go for the most basic of basic eye makeup advice, such as where to apply it, how to apply it, what colors go where, etc. I received some very nice eye makeup for Christmas which I have yet to wear and I feel really bad for not using it. I looked through the master-post that you just reblogged and didn't find anything useful. You seemed like a good person to ask advice of and I hope this isn't a bother. Thank you in advance.
hi!! i’m so glad you asked
i mean first of all, you don’t need to wear the eyeshadow. you don’t owe it. wear eyeshadow because you want to, not because you’d feel obligated!
okay so you might have more colours than this but i’m going to talk you through this with three. for simplicity’s sake, i’ll call the lightest white, the middle gray, and the darkest black; substitute these for whatever (but you will always need a shimmering white or very light colour for the first step). lilac and mauve. pastel green and grass green. rose gold and taupe. whatever makes you happy.
so in the very inner corner of your eye and on the very bottom of the bridge of your nose, you want your white. you could also apply this as a base all over the mobile lid (the part that moves when you blink) and a bit above the crease if you want. the inner-corner thing gives the illusion of your eyes being wider apart. also if you want to make your eyebrow arches look higher, you can put this on your brow bone (the top of your eye socket).
next, get your gray and put that over the middle and end of your eyelid, covering your mobile lid and the crease. get a more intense colour into your crease if you can, by doing that first when most powder is on the brush. this gives the illusion of more deep-set, less protruding eyes.
then, get your black and make a sort of sideways v over your crease and next to the lash line. this adds definition. finally, blend to get rid of harsh edges; gently pass your ring finger (it's softest) or a clean eyeshadow blending brush (the fluffy one) over your eyelid a couple of times, or gently rub the divisions between two colours until they fade into one another.
However this is of limited use without pictures and demonstrations: i’d most highly recommend a written one here, by alle of xovain, and also just search youtube.
also remember there are no rules. the above is a guideline, but if it looks better done differently then do it differently. do what makes you happy.
