What’s the worst book you’ve ever read, and why?
Probably not objectively the worst, but one where the very thought of it can still infuriate me years later is The Time-Traveler’s Wife. Not only was the entire premise creepy as all yee-haw, but I have, ahem, some class issues and little tolerance for the genre of upper middle class twits in love, and I remember the heroine of the book had a job making sculptures out of paper, and I was too busy loudly thinking get a real job at her to muster up much sympathy about her terrible husband and possible grooming as a child.
The book(s) you bought because the cover was pretty, and whether it was worth it
I read a lot of e-books, so I’m more likely to make snap judgements based on the title rather than the cover. I do remember thinking that Special Topics in Calamity Physics was an excellent title wasted on an utter balls of a novel. But then after Upper Middle Class Twits in Love my least favourite genre is Poor Little Rich Kids.

If I hadn’t already read Flowers for Algernon I would have done after that PoI episode. I still totally love that Root tortured a guy by aggressively sending him a book every year. Speaking of PoI, I need to read more Jane Austen (I’ve only read Emma and Northanger Abbey) and Sense and Sensibility is next on the list. I do wonder if Root reading that was meant to be a funny, unexpected character note, like her reading bridal magazines, or if it was included because of that quote from it about some couples only needing seven days - if so, ouch!

I don’t, but largely because the lion’s share of what I read are e-books and library books, rather than because I’ve got a particular stick up my butt about it.
