i got really hurt accidentally and i am quite sore and quite bruised as well. i keep waiting for someone to see the bruises and ask what happened so i say "you should see the other guy". but so far that hasn't happened. guess life isn't like the movies :/ #my injury

3 hours in. Dude watching this game is not only an experience in rediscovering how pretty the Japanese Inaka is, but also it's reminding of that stretch in time as a child when I was living on top of a Jinja (don't ask, the context is rather complicated unless I lore dump about my childhood for hours). I used to help out with the 助務 (Jinja assistant stuff) cause our only neighbor was the 神主 (priest?? In English? I think???), and I was a kid. The place I lived in was also home to Tokyo's oldest Oinari shrine, actually. Funny enough.

I'm largely Agnostic, but my religion growing up was very much Shinto. If there's any religion I can say I align with, in a sense, it's still just Shintoism. Polytheism just makes more sense to me, tbh. Especially with the experiences that I gotta go through, sometimes. The Native Americans actually knew what was up.

Anyways yeah, the Jinja practices and rituals, as well as the symbolism of the entire game is so nostalgic (and kinda comfortimg) to me bro, I love it. I thought I'd be more scared of this game, but I'm actually liking this story so much more because I can sense the creator's respect to the legitimate history of the Showa period, and the practices of cultural faith. Which isn't something that anyone still remembers nowadays, I'd think.

The Showa period is also a time in which many local faiths were attempted to be destroyed by the government, so that the Japanese nation could align as a majority religion into Buddhist practices, or what was otherwise known to be an Imperial Faith; which includes worshipping the Emperor of Japan, as if the royal lineage isn't human, but in fact a some sort of deity.

So much of Japanese history has been silenced in the face of conforming to global societal expectations, and shame. Japan is a nation of unspeakable crimes, and we are a generation that's never been taught about our own past, or the atrocities we've committed in order to survive it.

Silent Hill F is an incredible form of media to teach others the nature of what was Japanese history for the average person living through it - for the sole reason that this story is portrayed in the way that it is.

It's a horror story.

ALSO Silent Hill F seems honestly kinda fun (gameplay-wise), and I actually WOULD probably buy & play it, if only I had a device that could handle it. Which I don't. Unfortunately.

Ok I don't wanna talk spoilers AT ALL, but I'm just gonna say that the symbolic nature of having a Naginata as Hinako's MAIN WEAPON is SO COOL BRO YOU DON'T GET IT.

In terms of Japanese history, the Naginata spear was a weapon given to largely female soldiers. I believe in world war 2, women were trained in the Naginata for self defense. The use of daggers and other shortblades follows this same principle.

Hinako, more than anything, is portrayed as an (unwilling) symbolic stand-in for the Japanese Female Warrior. Her main principles seem to lie in her extremely close bonds with her friends, her unwillingness to conform to the society around her, and her very strict code of morals.

Shu's kinda a fuckin simp, but yo I get why he's like this. Especially since they've probably been close since they were kids, I understand why he looks up to her, so much. He's probably looked up to her as a role model of the type of person he wants to become.
