Max Verstappen, hands down most compelling athlete alive right now IMO. Actual quite harrowing childhood, weight of an entire nation’s hopes placed on him literally from birth (they labeled him a future world champion in the national newspaper’s announcement of his birth). They then put a literal child in an F1 car (he was 16) and then the governing body made that illegal literally right after so no one will ever be a prodigy like him ever again. Insanely, insanely, truly insanely talented (probably the purest talent in the sports’ history). Completely imprinted onto his team as a second family, his relationship with his engineer is genuinely wonderful. Obsessed to a neurodivergent degree with racing in all its forms…. Literally it’s all he cares about. He has no hobbies other than racing, he is the best formula 1 driver in the world, but he is also top 5 best sim racers on the planet, has his own sim racing team that he competes with during the F1 season, etc.

Is the single most straight talking no bullshit athlete with the media in the world. Not afraid to shit talk about all the bad things about the sport, to its face, regularly lists all the things that he thinks need to be changed. Never learned how to obfuscate or be diplomatic, Will shit all over rule changes, race format changes, and schedule expansions on the regular.

Seems to have formed legit friendships with a huge chunk of the other drivers, including yes his former teammate Daniel Ricciardo….

obsessed with this incredible read on this man. please come talk to me @secretdonderwolk so we can discuss this more. i know a fair amount about him by virtue of living max verstappen nation, like, backstory wise/personality wise but obviously all filtered through the lens of the country he's winning for lmao. also extremely compelled by danny ric who seems opportunistic to the point of desperation about him and has really figured out what sells and what doesn't and isn't afraid to lose himself for it so like.... slay....

Prompted by the 'sports guys suck, fork found in kitchen' tag and also the need to psychoanalyse the paperdolls, please say that you have seen the max verstappen clip "my dad once did that to a mechanic with a fork". Blew my third eye wide open about how fucked up these guys are. Fandom with intergenerational trauma? amazing.

yeah, i did see that. if there's one thing guys are gonna do it's trauma dump to a man with big brown cow eyes and a hint of whimsy about him. i ain't holding back to an older dude with a great active listening face. whatever i say gorgeous! etc

Different anon to the one you replied to recently, but my experience is so in line with what they said about the F1 fandom. It can be fun, but a toxic quagmire, and I've taken a step back recently. I still love F1 the sport, and will watch and attend the races, but don't interact about it online anymore. Is there any chance you could tag your F1 posts with a consistent tag so that I can block it? Absolutely no worries if not - I'd love to keep interacting with your hockey posts, but gotta curate my experience on here!

F1 is best enjoyed when you understand that all of these guys are deeply fucked up, probably aren't great people, and the fandom is mostly former 1d fans/people who aren't into sports other than f1/motorsports and are generally very into politically correctness etc. Like, Max V once pushed a guy who crashed him out of his race and people are still talking about it years later as if he killed a man. Every time a guy gets mad at someone else on the radio you have think piece on how they should not be allowed to race if they can't control their emotion etc. TeamLH is out for blood every race week, the tifosis are delulu enough to think their team will win the WCC and will turn against their own drivers for the slightest faux pas, and the maxiel girlies have somehow gaslighted themselves into thinking their drivers are uwu softboys who can do no wrong. You're either a Max V girlie or you want his fans to be tortured medieval style. Lewis is your god or evil. You're in mourning over Seb Vettel or you think nobody understands him like you do. Everyone's neurotic. Everyone's trying to kill everyone else, allies included.

I've taken a step back from the fandom myself the last few months because there's so much drama all the time and while I'm super nosy, I do not want to be involved thank you very much. Too much proximity with the fandom also really influenced how I perceived things and I want to get into the new season without that constant discourse in the back of my mind. I'll be happy to answer your questions though! I'll try my best to answer :)

absolutely you can. having the same name as your dad truly the open door metaphor of all open door metaphors but it always, always hits. also insane face card let’s be real. him and that little monagasque guy charles… it’s giving gay uncles who are physically incapable of having dinner before ten pm/get you vintage prada for your sixteenth birthday and a bottle of champagne from your birth year etc
