The open window did little to let in any sort of breeze the morning after the wedding. Will felt too warm before he opened his eyes, though he suspected that was because he’d been too tipsy and lazy to change out of his clothes. He hadn’t drank much, but he’d still never drank that much before, and he’d never ever fallen asleep in an open button-down shirt, but then again he’d never fought with Blake, not like that. It was so embarrassing, thinking about how angry he’d gotten at him, in front of people too. Though he knew it was irrational, Will hoped it had only been a nightmare and that when he opened his eyes, everything would be the way it had always been.
Instead, he opened his eyes to Blake’s sleeping face mere inches away from his own on the pillow. He was close enough to feel his breath and he looked so tired yet peaceful, a total contrast to the way he’d looked when he’d stormed away on the dance floor. It took a moment, but the memories of Blake coming through his window and them hugging as close as they’d ever hugged before hit him like a bus. Had they both said sorry, or had he imagined that part? He couldn’t remember much besides finally settling into a real, non-restless sleep once Blake was in his arms.
But this was wrong! It felt too good, and Will knew it wasn’t fair to his friend that Will got such sick satisfaction out of waking up to Blake in his bed, to the feel of their legs entangled slightly under the covers, the way his arm was caught under Blake’s weight. It was so domestic and intimate, and he knew it meant something way too different to him than it did to Blake, which is why he couldn’t even pretend to play along with a “bro date”, and why he’d felt his heart break last night when he saw Blake kissing somebody, anybody. It was wrong to take advantage of their friendship like this just because -
God, he couldn’t even let himself think it. The mere mental suggestion sent him into a panic and Will immediately had trouble breathing. It was horrible because Blake was the person who usually helped with his panic attacks but right now Will just needed to get away from Blake, to untangle and remove himself before he woke up and somehow knew, before everyone knew.
He jerked the arm that was trapped under Blake, trying desperately to get free and failing. Holding his breath, Will tried one more time and not only did he not manage to liberate himself, but from the way Blake’s eyelids were blinking and his breath was changing, it appeared that he’d woken him up.
Will stayed where he was, mostly frozen due to embarrassment. “Good morning,” he ended up saying, at a loss for anything else.
