goth/habiba has used Carol Queen's essay "Why I Love Butch Women" in defense of her claims that bi women can't use butch/femme, while remaining apparently unaware that Queen is bisexual. It says so on her wikipedia page, *and* in the essay itself Queen talks about being attracted to men! (Feminine men are still men!)
Obviously I didn’t see that happen, and I’m not going on her blog ever again if I can help it, but it’s exactly the kind of thing that is completely in keeping with her historical revisionism so, you know.
For the followers I’m just now getting, presumably because of this shitshow, butch and femme are identity terms associated with queer femininity, and are not actually restricted to a single gender or orientation. There are femme gay cis men, there are butch straight trans women, there are high femme nonbinary people and stone butch transmasculine people and every other combination you can possibly think of.
Femme and butch are terms that describe, respectively, the queering of classical femininity by engaging in femininity for the consumption of people other than straight men (including for self-consumption), and butch refers to the queering of classical masculinity by stripping it of its traditional association with binary gender roles.
Both of these types of queer expression are primarily performed by queer women, but they are by no means limited to queer women, and by super extra no means limited to cis lesbian women.
Nor have they ever been.
That is literally a basic line of propaganda pushed by (you guessed it) trans exclusionary radical feminists starting in the early 1970s.
But whatever. It’s only transphobia if a pretty cis girl says it is, why listen to actual trans people. It’s only biphobia when lesbian women say it is, why listen to bisexuals. Etc and so forth, this is such old news.
