Thursday 4/17 at 8:15pm at Gene Siskel Film Center -- A Picture of You - Directed by: J.P. Chan - A death in the family reunites estranged siblings for a cathartic adventure that is part melodrama and part dark comedy. Hyper-critical Jen and glumly placating Kyle begin the job of dissembling their mother’s lake house with the help of two friends when a discovery among mom’s things sends them reeling with shock and sets off a hastily-conceived search for clues to the missing chapter in her life and the missing sense of family in their own lives. Monday, 4/14 at 8pm at Gene Siskel Film Center -- To Be Takei -- Directed by: Jennifer Kroot -- Since coming out in 2005, actor George Takei, beloved as Star Trek’s Hikaru Sulu, has developed a parallel career as an activist against homophobia and for marriage equality. Director Kroot taps Takei’s sharp intelligence and wicked sense of humor in telling the story of a man who spent his childhood in a Japanese internment camp and battled racism and stereotyping throughout his long career. Interviews include William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, Howard Stern, and Dan Savage. DCP digital. (BS) #tobetakei #georgetakei #faaim #chicago #genesiskelfilmcenter #film #art
Sunday 4/13 5:15pm at Gene Siskel Film Center -- Documented - Directed by Jose Antonio Vargas -- In 2011, successful, admired and at the top of his game in his profession, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jose Antonio Vargas did the unthinkable: he revealed himself as an illegal immigrant in The New York Times Magazine. DOCUMENTED questions the meaning of citizenship in a saga that charts Vargas’s efforts on behalf of other Americans like himself, brought to the U.S. as children, his passionate lobbying on behalf of the Dream Act, and his emotional journey to reconcile with his past history and his Filipino family. In English, Tagalog, and Spanish with English subtitles. Co-presented by the Filipino American Network of Chicago. DCP digital. Saturday 4/12 8pm at Gene Siskel Film Center - AMERICAN REVOLUTIONARY: THE EVOLUTION OF GRACE LEE BOGGS - Directed by: Grace Lee - Filmmaker Lee (THE GRACE LEE PROJECT) and Grace Lee Boggs first met because they share a name. Lee went on to follow the now 98-year-old activist Boggs for more than ten years, creating this inspiring chronicle of a woman utterly dedicated to the cause of social justice for African Americans. Feisty, brilliantly articulate, and often controversial, Boggs is front and center in her own story encompassing the Civil Rights era, the Black Power Movement, friendship with Malcolm X, marriage to a black auto worker, and decades of activism in Detroit. Monday 4/7 at 8pm at Gene Siskel Film Center -- The Haumana - Directed by: Goh Nakamura --A deathbed commission from a revered teacher propels Waikiki lounge singer Jonny (Asau) into an awkward new role as keeper of Hawaii’s sacred tradition of the hula. Woozy and boozy, he must revive his own long-abandoned commitment to the ancient art to win over a skeptical clutch of young male dancers in time for the Royal Hula Festival. Director Woolford provides an eye-filling look at the real thing as his performers rapidly progress from the neophyte stage to full-fledged hip-swiveling wonders. The tropical setting doesn’t hurt a bit. In English and Hawaiian with English subtitles. DCP digital. #faaim #film #asianamerican #hawaii #media #chicago #genesiskelfilmcenter
