❛ did you mean it ? ❜

Fab sat at the end of his own bed, reading and rereading and rerereading the paper he held in his hands. A letter from him. A letter addressed to Mary. A letter asking her to meet him, alone, the night she has been attacked.
A letter he never wrote.
And yet somehow it was here in his room, next to Kingsley’s bed. A letter from him that had led to Mary getting hurt. Mary hadn’t told him, Kingsley hadn’t told him, who knows who else knew about it... He’d just been walking around like an ass, acting like he could help Mary feel better with picnics and dancing, when all this time she knew that he was directly responsible for her being hurt in the first place.
Even as he felt Mary stirring behind him, he refused to look up from the letter, poring over every single sentence, every single letter. It was his fault. Was he... sad? Was he angry? He didn’t know, and he couldn’t even process the information on his own, because of all people Mary had to be right there, right now.

Decked out in only his finest purple coat (his only purple coat), with a top hat and a bow tie to complete the Willy Wonka look, Fabian was having an all-around decent night. That is, until he noticed a certain Gryffindor, who - after several failed attempt to catch her eye - he determined did not want to see him. Fab didn’t even know she was out of the hospital wing, and it was weird that she wouldn’t say anything to him. He hadn’t drank much, as recent events didn’t exactly have him in a massive partying mood, but the alcohol he did drink gave him just enough boldness to catch Mary at a moment she wasn’t actively talking to anyone and pull her aside. If she was upset with him, he wanted to know why.
“Hey, are you-” avoiding me, to complete the thought, but luckily he stopped himself before that point. “I didn’t know Pomfrey let you out.”

Fab stood outside the door to the bakery, one hand holding a small bouquet of flowers (carefully picked out with the assistant of the florist, with the request of “something nice but not too much, please”) and one hand lifted in a fist that was ready to knock at any moment, though it was just sort of frozen there for now. Okay, so, it had been a minute. It wasn’t like he hadn’t spoken to Mary in months; he’d sent her owls when he could, and once a small trinket he had found in a small shop that he thought she’d like, but he hadn’t really seen her since they’d ended things and he’d had to leave for a bit.
Was this going to be weird? Fuck, he didn’t want it to be weird. It wasn’t going to be weird. It might be weird. It was probably going to be weird. Did she hate him now? They broke up because of his job, essentially, which he both regretted and didn’t regret for vastly different reasons. It wasn’t fair to keep her waiting for him if he was going to be off constantly doing shit for both the Order and the Ministry, stuff he both wasn’t allowed to talk about and probably wouldn’t want to anyway. But now he was back back, hopefully for at least a while (maybe hopefully? he didn’t know how to feel about not having something massive to work on at the moment, though a break never killed anyone. ...yet), no big secret mission in sight from either end. Time to get back to normal, or whatever ‘normal’ really was right now. If Fab knew anything, it was that Mary was a part of that normal.
Actually, maybe he shouldn’t. Maybe he should turn around, actually, just go see what Kingsley or Gideon were up to. Mac was probably busy anyway, she had a whole ass bakery to run, she didn’t wanna see him out of the blue, right? Should he have sent a message before showing up? Probably, actually, yeah, but now it was too late ‘cause if he sent her a warning he’d just have to awkwardly stand around the area until the time he told her and then what would he even do if she decided to go for a walk around the block before he said he’d stop by and found him just standing outside her home like an absolute weirdo and then it would definitely be weird at that point and-
He knocked. And waited.
“Mac! Hey! Have you been here long?”

Fabian sat on one of the couches in the Gryffindor common room, flipping through a magazine someone had left out on a table. He had been hanging out with Gideon, but he ran off to Quidditch practice, leaving Fab in what might as well have been his second common room as he waited for Mary to wake up from what he assumed was a nap, seeing as it was now three in the afternoon and she hadn’t emerged from the girls’ dorm yet.
The attack on Mary had left him both shaken and livid, and now the first part had worn off and he was left with an almost overwhelming feeling of anger anytime he thought of Mary sitting in the hospital wing, forgetting who hurt her, though he knew that wasn’t true. She didn’t want to say. And that made him even angrier.
The problem was, Fab couldn’t be angry when he was around her, because she didn’t deserve to deal with that, not right now, not still so soon after it all. He had to act like everything was fine, for Mary’s sake, and today? Today acting like everything was fine meant forcing Mary out of Gryffindor tower and treating her to a picnic lunch, which was definitely his idea, for sure.
“Hey!” Finally he saw her coming down the stairs that led to her dorm, “Good... morning. Am I allowed to say that this late in the day? Good afternoon’s too formal, sounds weird. Anyway, you hungry?”
