The Winter Egg is a Fabergé egg, one of a series of fifty-two jewelled Easter eggs created by Russian jeweler Peter Carl Fabergé. It was an Easter 1913 gift for TsarinaMaria Feodorovna from Tsar Nicholas II, who had a standing order of two Easter eggs every year, one for his mother and one for his wife. It was designed by Alma Pihl. The exterior of the egg resembles frost and ice crystals formed on clear glass. It is studded with 1,660 diamonds, and is made from quartz, platinum, and orthoclase. The miniature surprise flower basket is studded with 1,378 diamonds and is made from platinum and gold, while the wood anemones are made of white quartz and the leaves are made of demantoid. The flowers lie in gold moss.

Minutes ago, the Winter Fabergé Egg was sold at auction for £19.5million

The Egg was commissioned by Nicholas II for 24,600 roubles, and presented to his mother in April 1913, Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna, as an Easter gift. It was the third most expensive Fabergé egg ever created. The Egg is exquisitely crafted in rock crystal and diamonds to replicate frosty snow and melting ice. It was designed by Alma Theresia Pihl and created by Albert Holmstrom.

As with many Fabergé eggs, it has a surprise. A pin can be removed from the centre of the Egg to reveal a basket of flowers, created from platinum and rose-cut diamonds. Each flower was individually created from sculpting white quartz petals, garnet centres, and supported by stems with nephrite leaves. The base of the basket, pictured above, reads ‘FABERGÉ 1913’.

The auction, that began at 5pm GMT today, is part of a wider collection of Fabergé treasures being sold by Christie’s in London. In anticipation of the sale, the Winter Egg was exhibited around the globe at Christie’s offices in Hong Kong and New York, before arriving in London for today’s sale. It was previously sold by Christie’s New York in April 2002, reaching almost $9,600,000, a world record figure for a Fabergé sale at auction. Today’s sale was estimated to reach at least £20,000,000.
