So, this is what happened last weekend. While you were probably having a taste of your new given freedom from the lockdown and start to tan on a beach I dissected a head of a man. The surgery went very well and now the specimen is ready to be preserved using the petrification technique and can be moved to an anatomy museum. Nah, just kidding. I simply carved a head of a dead man, then I "dissected" it with my chisel and mallet. I have to admit i had a lot of fun with this project. It comes a moment when you have to say "it's finished" otherwise you will continue forever. That's the curse of the artist. So here is the lady I've been working on for so long. I call it the three-eyed lady because she has an extra eye on her back, because why not? There are so many portraits made every day since classical times and they all look similar. I wanted to give her a fantasy touch, like she is a monster in disguise. Turn the volume on when playing the video. Can you hear that rythmic chiseling, that bashing orchestra, that metal on stone marriage? That is the sound of a teeming workshop. It's mesmerising, it's relaxing, it's loud and yet peaceful. If a chisel slips off or a stone breaks or a carver is not good enough (and we know that by the wrong rhythm) the whole symphony is over. A little experiment I've done. I had a small off cut of richemont blanc. I carved a quick face, then attached it to an old vintage base and used some gold paint to enhance the third eye and the rays. Sometimes it's good to experiment and try new things without a plan. He is in trance, communicating with the gods. He is actually asking for favours that in due time he will repay. 2018 has been quite meager in terms of number of sculptures (only 3). Travelling for work took a lot of days off from the chisel. And yet I'm satisfied because I experimented new media and I challenged myself with you new a diverse subjects. As some of you already know 2 years ago I finished the copy of the Our Lady's tumbler, which is currently in the Exeter Cathedral. The sculpture was then given to Eddie Sinclair, a professional restorer, in order to paint it over with the original medieval colours. The painting is finished now and this is what it would have looked like 700 years ago in all its splendour! It has been a monumental endeavour for me and seeing it finished with all these vibrant colours is breathtaking. Hope you like it too!
