Looking at this farewell party for Fionna and the only think I can think is, like…
the final simon collection 💔
You know, it's soooo cool that they made a whole post-credit scene just so we could all get a better look at Fionnaworld Tree Trunks and NOTHING ELSE!! This is clearly the most and only important thing about this scene!!
Top Ten Looks When You Show Up Late to Your Boyfriend's Funeral
Minerva was the first one to come up with the idea of digitizing Finn, but she did internalize her lessons from "The Light Cloud", now she would just like Finn to enjoy all of the Meatspace things that he loves and she cannot have anymore…
But it's Princess Bubblegum who pushes her to go through with it, and honestly… it kinda seems like it was a plan she had in her backburner for quite a while? Like, calling up Minerva was a "welp, I guess we have other choice", not a "Wait! I have a NEW idea!"…
And she sure pulled out that Indestructible Robot Body pretty quickly…
I think Princess Bubblegum has been planning this out for a while now, she just hoped it'll be for when Finn is at risk of dying from (actual) old age and not right now. Immortality almost seems like the default to her since this is how her girlfriend and many of her other loved ones operate, and… in general it has always been hard for her to accept endings.
But more than anything, Finn is a really important friend to her, and knowing she was always going to outlive him… instead of handling this preemptive grief, she was already making backup plans to keep Finn around forever.
That might also be why she was so insistent on the idea of pumping him full of Super-Science-Botox during 'The Bird in the Cloak'. She says it's for the greater good and keeping people's 'morale' up, but I think the real morale she was trying to keep up was her own. Because the wrinkles were a reminder of Finn's real inevitable mortality.
And Bonnie might not be alone in this instinct, Marceline also gave into the urge to try and Vamp Finn very very easily…
It's possible that she's also been considering how she'd keep him immortal, in the only way she knows how.
For as much as we've been talking about how terribly Finn has been handling Jake's death, I think a lot of Finn's friends are not doing so great handling their own concept of Grief either…
Which feels very appropriate for this Season's themes for how we are all connected and all reflect each other. Finn feels totally alone in his pain, but so many of his friends actually have very similar problems deep down…
Man, this line is already pretty sad when you think, like, this is Minerva wanting to vicariously live through her son, wanting him to have both the Physical Organic Experiences that she can't have anymore...
...And also have the relationship experiences that she doesn't feel like she'd ever have again...
But then you also think about how a few years after this scene, Jake died, and Finn's only coping mechanism was to dissociate from everything... He spent years just going through the motions of what used to make him happy but actually just wasting time until he can finally die...
And, like, at least things got better for him after this episode. He didn't need Huntress Wizard to go out dancing or attend Peebs' Gumbo Festival with him, but it did really help him to know that he's loved.
But.... We also know that on some level, he never resolved that problem completely...
In "Together Again", he wanted to reincarnate because he felt like he missed on so much of his life due to the overwhelming nature of his grief.
Regression and the sometimes cyclical nature of the healing process has been a huge theme this season, it makes sense to me that Finn's attempts to keep on Living after Jake was less of One Singular Problem that was resolved by a True Love's Kiss...
And more of an ongoing process of ups and downs as Finn keeps on struggling to truly live that didn't resolve until 'Together Again'.
I dunno if I am just really really sad thinking about how at the end of the day, Finn, despite his exciting lifestyle and cheerful demeanor, did end up losing so many years that could've been joyous to his depression...
Or if I should simply appreciate that despite it all, with the help of Fionna and Huntress Wizard, there were still times where Finn got to once again be really alive.
I love it when the symbolism and the in-universe lore end up working together in perfect harmony.
It makes 100% in-universe sense that the last remaining piece of Ooo's Heart of the Forest is the poison that's inside of Finn.
But it's also like, yeah, obviously, the path that leads Huntress back to Ooo has to be through her most important connection in that Universe. The Heart she was looking for was inside Finn all along.
