this may seem like a dumb question but what determines who wins a faceoff? like is it the player who touches the puck first or the team that gets possession from the faceoff?

This actually isn’t a dumb question at all this is a really good question. I’m not sure if there’s a discrepancy based on who’s recording faceoff wins but it’s my understanding that it goes to the team who gets possession not necessarily the person who touches the puck first on the draw. because the players taking the face off can touch the puck a million times and it oculd get stuck there for a few seconds and sometimes a player not taking the faceoff will skate in and grab the puck from the dot. So the win goes to the possession team.

This isn’t a dumb question though, I feel like it’s the type of question most people don’t even think to ask. they take faceoff wins for granted. Just because you were thoughtful enough to ask it does not make it a dumb question. That being said i love dumb questions here because i promise a bunch of other people are wondering and just are too embarrassed to ask.
