Facebook Launches Its Desktop Messenger Version For Windows And MacOS
Facebook messenger has gotten a new version of messenger for desktop users. The social giant has launched an app for video calling amid the Covid-19 worldwide situation, to help stay people together and connected in a closer way.
With the 100% use of audio and video calling through the Facebook messenger because of the lockdown situations, Facebook has introduced a new desktop version of Facebook messenger with free unlimited group and video calling options for MacOS and Windows. One can make a group video call on a bigger screen, enjoy with family and friends even virtually or can carry out workouts together through video calling.
The desktop messenger was announced by Facebook a year ago at its F8 conference. The messenger also had a windows app version in 2011 but due to some reason it was scrapped then. The current situation in the world has however made Facebook launch the Messenger app for desktop without much fuss or publicity as the conference was cancelled due to Covid-19 this year.
Facebook happened to introduce its app when Zoom was gaining importance. Unlike Zoom, Facebook can allow 8 group video call participants, whereas Zoom can handle 100-500 participants at a time. But Zoom has some privacy issues, hence it can be expected that people will be using the desktop version of Facebook messenger for video and audio calls. Another drawback of the Facebook Messenger desktop app is that it can’t share URLs to let people join the calls. As a result, this desktop app isn’t feasible for public seminars and live social events. Also, the desktop messenger app doesn’t have an option of screen sharing.
Even though Facebook desktop messenger app can’t be probably used for work purposes efficiently, it surely can be used to keep people connected in a better way during the lockdown crisis.
