This tutorial is preceded by a simpler tutorial: Here you will learn basics using a grid to sketch a face in the profile.
Sketch face using a template
Start with a sketch of the profile. Try to draw the face from the side so that the eyes, nose, mouth and lips are in the right proportion.
Your sketched face should now look like this: After sketching the profile, the part of the work that incorporates life into the picture begins. A drawn face only becomes real when it reproduces light and shadow in a way that we also find in reality. Details like eyelashes or eyes you can still neglect. It is important that the forehead, nose, lips and chin are worked out correctly. All of these elements form a contour line that must necessarily be finished. Ideally, already hair strands are already indicated and shadow. Hatched lines are enough for that.
Hair shines and cast shadows. Because you can not draw gloss on white paper, you need to draw shadows and leave spaces for shine. So hatch dark areas under and next to your sketching lines. Do not press too hard and hold the pen at an angle. Continue the work on the hair and draw in more hairlines. In the dark, shady areas you draw more lines that make a darker overall picture. The bright areas leave you untouched. Imagine, light falls from the top left into the picture. Accordingly, you will find bright areas on all surfaces that are exposed to the light source. You can darken the other surfaces. Maybe this digitally edited image of your imagination will help:
As you can see, all protruding areas are illuminated by light and therefore need to remain bright. Just ask yourself: Where does light and heat meet directly? You can darken all other areas. Do you see:
So hatch all dark areas with fine lines. The finer you are, the smoother the skin appears. If you do not want to smudge the graphite, you should be very sensitive and careful hatching, not as rude as me: Verdunkle so the areas under the chin, under the nose (missing here), next to the nose and in the eye socket. If you want to blur your drawing, now is the time to do it. Take a clean handkerchief and wipe the graphite extremely carefully. You do not have to do that! Pencil drawings can also have the typical structure of hatching, usually making them even more characterful and beautiful. Decide for yourself whether you want to wipe or not.
As a rule, I need several passes until the shadows are in the correct darkness. Light can not be drawn. Light is created on white paper only by the lack of shade. That's why you should spend most of your time drawing clean shadows and working out contrasts. This step may take longer. Use sharp pencils and press down a little. Avoid erasing and destroying the beautiful smooth skin. Everything should be smooth and intermesh. If you're a beginner, use shadows sparingly and get the right shades of gray step by step. Hatch and blur alternately (if you like blurring). This step really takes a long time and in the end, your drawing should look something like this:
On the lips you have the strongest contrasts. Here you can use a sharp eraser to indicate light. Lip wrinkles are bright on one side and very dark on the other. Like small ditches, they pass through the skin. You only need to indicate teeth in the dark mouth. The oral cavity, nostrils, eyelashes and pupil should become the darkest elements. Do not forget the light reflection in the eye. I have already written other lip and eye tutorials , you are welcome to read them.
After shadows and areas of light are properly drawn, you can dare to details. Eyelashes and eyebrows are curved, dark strokes. Pull them out of the neck to make them narrower. Do not overdo it and do not draw too many hairs. Likewise, you can now draw the iris and the pupil .
Take your time for all this. Hair is usually the most expensive. Continue your work from earlier and draw more lines in the dark areas. Do not be afraid to draw long lines. The important thing is to pull every line through in one go. Do not drop the pen, but pull Liinen out of the wrist.
If you want, you can easily hatch and blur dark areas. Bright strands you erase against it with an eraser white. Do not be frustrated! Drawing hairstyles takes a long time. It's like in real life, where women spend hours in the bathroom and straighten their hair.
In the last step you draw the smallest details into the picture. I improved the cigarettes and let them smoke. Also, the front of the eyelid is now bright. You can now draw in jewelry, tattoos or fine lines.
And then you're done.
