The Outlet Shopper's Lament

J. Crew friends (and my mom and Aunt Barb, pro-am outlet shoppers), we must discuss:

I am giving this factory store handbag development serious consideration. First, let me disclose that I am aware my love of the hunt (oh how delicious it is when one's prey is a marked down [making it all the more fabulous] designer item--say, a cashmere sweater...mmmm) can sometimes get in the way of my otherwise good sense at the outlets.

Mostly, though, I'm starting to suspect my outlet sensibilities are a bit passe. I can remember (in that long ago time, when I was but learning the art of outlet shopping...pre-smart phones, post-microwave ovens) outlets selling clothes that didn't seem so made-for-factory (because, I dare suggest, they weren't!). We looked closely for other deal breakers--uneven sleeves, boxy cuts, missing buttons, loose threads--but felt confident a shirt that appeared error-free would pass for regular store quality.

Now our outlet adventures mostly yield made-for-factory clothes (ahem: sub-par quality) at regular store prices. And herein lies my concern about the J. Crew factory handbags. Yes, I was immediately drawn to the Factory Jericho Pursette. But (even with this weekend's 20% off sale) the $98 tag seems ridiculous when I could buy a "full quality" (do we have an actual term for this yet?) bag (hello, Bronwyn pursette) for just $30 more (and, I'm betting, exponentially better quality).

I am withholding my final judgement until I can check out these factory bags in person. In the meantime, what do you think?
