life was moving quickly, and yet stellan didn’t feel a day over thirty five. those around him would grow up and mature — students graduating, going to college, carving careers for themselves — and yet he didn’t feel different at all. the reflection told otherwise ; his sandy blonde hair slowly turning grey and the crows - feet wrinkles in the corners of his eyes. offloading a few things for an evening meal into the basket ( tomatoes on the vine, fresh pasta, a good glass of white wine ) was when he spotted her. helena, a girl he had taught briefly yet had never forgotten, one that he had made extra effort to include when the unfamiliar world seemed so big and scary. he knew how it had felt, to be the new and strange student in an established cohort. although decades had passed since it was stellan walking those corridors alone and, he supposed, a good few years since helena’s time, too. “fancy seeing you here,” an entertained hum, “you know, i never envisioned us reuniting in the dairy aisle.”
