Mahdyar seizes the moment on gritty debut album

Mahdyar has previously been referred to as Iran’s answer to RZA, after his productions provided the bedrock for Tehran’s hip-hop explosion a decade ago. However, the national government’s attempts to suppress the underground scene led the classically-trained musician to leave the country in 2009, settling in Paris where his reputation and repertoire have continued to grow.

The result is Seized, Mahdyar’s long-awaited debut album, which drops on Kowloon Records tomorrow. While continuing to demomstrate the producer’s love of dark, gritty beats (he still produces tracks for Persian rappers such as Quf, Hichkas and Fadaei), Seized contorts his sound into thrillingly original new shapes. ‘Timmy Might Bury Ya’ll’ is a prime example, combining aggressive, distorted beats with warped Middle Eastern samples:

“Creatively speaking, I have been working on it intermittently for quite a long time”, Mahdyar told The Quietus (who are streaming the album in full today). “I brought certain elements of the recordings with me from Iran, other parts were added at periods of inspiration during my journey through Europe and the whole process culminated in me beginning to piece everything together towards its final shape over the past year or so.

“My previous experiences juxtaposed against current events had a big part in deciding the overall theme of the album, 2 things that have really been on my mind recently are the problems the world is currently facing from all forms of extremism as well as the greed for power that seems to be infecting all of humanity. Something has been seized. It can be peace, love, thoughts, culture, life, privacy, freedom, media, borders, world… it’s not necessarily clear. It’s up to the listener to decide what has been seized.”
