As a blog created by two people from Pittsburgh, I feel it's important to pay attention and shed light on the immense talent within our city. I am constantly amazed at some of the bands I come across that happen to have been right under my nose all along. This time the band in question goes by the name "Rivka", and is comprised of Reggie Wilkins and Rivka Rose. They seem to have been making music for a while, but I wasn't exposed to them until recently when I discovered their latest release, entitled Faded EP.
I could tell immediately that their sound was one i was going to enjoy as it had a hauntingly chill vibe, but not to the point that it made me feel uncomfortable and creeped out. While the songs have generally simple and thin instrumental backings, it's not something one would grow bored of. It's quite the contrary actually, as the dreamlike flows will keep you hanging on to each sustained note waiting to glide to the next as part of the journey that accompanies each song. On top of that, Rivka Rose's beautiful and enticing vocals flow effortlessly in and out of the songs, complimenting the instrumental tracks perfectly. What I'd guess to be Reggie's voice also appears on tracks such as "Better Days" offering a deeper more bass sound, adding yet another seamless element to their experimental sound. Under each song there generally are soft trip-hop beats to move the track along. They also create transitional elements that are used to tie the whole album together as one continuous song. I really hope I get the opportunity to see these guys perform in person, as it sounds like it would be one totally mesmerizing experience. Give it a listen for yourself below!
