What's a Halloween tree? I already told my 5yr old Halloween is canceled. She suggested we dress up & trick or treat in the house. So, thats the plan.
It is, essentially, a Christmas tree but with Halloween ornaments, which are more common than you’d think? I first saw them at this Christmas ornament store in Boston years and years ago, and it was this kind of “wow, that’s a thing” moment because it seems like a lot of decorating, even for such an awesome holiday as Halloween.
And super not my kind of thing, because while I’m 100% all about decorating a lot, I’m also the mom to three young children, two of whom are toddlers and innately drawn to That Which Harms Them.
BUT. This year is a weird year. And Halloween is my six-year-old’s favorite. He’s always lived for the spooky stuff, loves skeletons and spiders (he’s in the process of clearing out his current toy room right now and is being very protective of every spider that’s made a home amidst the clutter), loves costumes and candy and all of that.
And one of his top five favorite movies is Nightmare Before Christmas. We always end up leaving a note from Jack Skellington on Christmas, too, since he usually gets something Jack-themed under the tree.
SO.
Knowing that Halloween just is not happening this year, at least not in any form that anyone would feel safe about, and knowing how much he’s going to miss it, my husband and I thought, “well maybe we could treat it like Christmas, but spooky.” And then we concocted this whole story about Jack being sad about missing Halloween so Santa takes over for him and does it all wrong but it’s okay because everyone’s super happy about it or something. Depending on my energy level around then (which will depend entirely on the ever changing bizarre climate of the world), I’m hoping to make the kids some Halloween-themed treats (which I’d have been doing anyway for the in school Halloween party); plus we’ll put their Halloween candy buckets under said tree, and they can wear their costumes all day and we’ll have a little in-home Halloween party. Maybe do a drive later in the evening to see everyone’s decorations.
So. That’s what we’re doing. It’s basically just my attempt to make this shitty year less shitty for them, because I have (questionable) coping skills but they do not.
