How to know if you're in Few and Far Between
Tagged by @inexorvble . Game basically consists of how to know... If you're in... Someone's WIP. Pretty self explanatory.
- you have a sibling who you love and despise so much that they're taking over your life
- you're very gay
- you crave emotional support that you refuse to ask for
- you have a crush on someone who you're 99% sure doesn't like you bUT THERE'S THAT ONE PERCENT CHANCE THAT THEY DO so you walk it like a tightrope
- you are emotionally unstable
- you're trying to find a missing girl with almost zero clues as to where she might be
- you've placed your entire self-worth upon finding said girl
- you're constantly fighting with yourself
- your parents are actually pretty supportive but they also don't know anything about you at the same time
Tagging @marewriteblr @no-url-ideas-tho @quillwritten and whoever else bc I don't know who to tag tbh. I always tag so many people and I'm scared people get annoyed
Character Profiles: Carson Carce
Age: 17 (Junior)
Full name: Carson Michael Carce
Status: Major character, brother of Nora (main character)
Sexuality: Gay
Out?: Carson is very out, and a very strong believer in coming out as soon as you can so the community has more representation.
Relationships: Boyfriend, David, who he breaks up with approx. halfway through the story.
Basic personality: He’s supportive, but he’s not the most open-minded about certain things. He’s very protective of his sister, but he knows that their age difference isn’t very far apart. He would probably do anything to make his younger sister feel better about herself.
Race/Gender: White. Russian great-grandparents. Male.
Basic Arc: He kind of starts out with a sense of superiority and a very closed mind about his views. He struggles to admit that some things are bigger than him (basically the opposite of Nora’s issue). By the end of the story, he figures out that some things aren’t about him through Nora’s coming out.
Okay so. I've been thinking
In regards to Few and Far Between, I've written maybe a couple hundred words in the past couple months. I tried the whole writing without an outline thing for this book for the first time since I wrote my first book (FaFB is my sixth novel). I thought it was working really, really well.
And now I'm not sure where I'm going. I lovr the characters more than any I've ever created, but I can't help but feel like the plot is just wrong. The story has become something about sibling relationships and sexuality and coming out and mental illness - finding a missing girl seems like a distraction.
And with my medical issues, we're pretty sure I have ADHD or something similar. Writing this book is getting to be one mess after the other. I get sidetracked. I follow rabbit trails and end up in wonderlands that are useless ane only further distract from the plot.
So for now, I'm shelving this project. It's my favorite set of characters that I've ever had, but it needs a new plot. I'll pick it up again someday.
I'm not really sure what I'm going to write, now. Maybe I'll touch up Fragile Bones? Start a brand new story? Work on the love of my life (AKA my fantasy series)? Who knows. But this project is not working.
1 and 10 for the asks !
1. What's your favorite word?
Ohhh my gosh this is. Hard. Probably something obscure that I just say all the time like tedious, infinitely, probable, stuff like that. But I also LIVE for the word cellar. I don't know why, I just do.
10. which one of your stories or ocs would you want someone to write fanfic/draw fanart for?
Easy. Few and Far Between for sure, because fanart of Nora and Carson being so and doing Sibling Stuff?? Fanart of Carson and David?? Fanart of Nora and Zoe???? Fanart of THE WHOLE GANG TOGETHER AS A GROUP SIMPLY EXISTING???
Iconic.
Writing Update
I’ve mentioned that I’m re-starting my WIP, Few and Far Between, just after hitting 25k words. This is mostly because I neglected to include the parents in that first 25 thousand words, and there were enough notes of things I wanted to add in draft two that it warranted just... starting over. I like to call it FaFB: Draft 1.5.
I also realized I don’t have a tag list for this WIP, so if you’re looking for something that’s not too complicated to get into, please stick around to read under the cut.
Anyway, I hit 2,000 words today. I was hoping to have more done by now, but I’ve had a migraine all afternoon and am just beginning to recover. However, I don’t have to work tomorrow, so hopefully it’ll be a good writing day.
Short excerpt:
“It’s been a long day.”
“Didn’t you have therapy today? You usually seem better on those days,” he said, curious. I hated it when he tried to psychoanalyze me, because he was usually right. And if he went too far, I would have to tell him. I don’t think I need to tell you that telling Carson I’m a lesbian was not a part of that day’s plan.
“I didn’t go to my fucking appointment, okay?” I snapped. “Mom and dad are mad because I skipped. Could you leave me alone now, please?”
He frowned, looking either confused or disappointed or maybe both. “But why’d you skip?”
“I don’t know.”
He scoffed. “Sure.”
“Alright, get out. I’m not dealing with you right now.”
He didn’t get out, to say the least. Actually, he came in and sat on the bed next to me like it was his room. I wanted to tell him to leave again, but I couldn’t make myself. I needed someone with me more than I cared to admit.
“Are you doing okay?” He asked, his voice losing all of its previous animosity.
My stomach churned. It was so weird when he went from rude and snotty to sensitive and caring like this. One second, he’d cold and closed-off, and before you know it he’s trying to help me again.
“I’m fine.” It was more of an auto-reply than a lie. It wasn’t the truth, but I might have said something else. I probably wouldn’t have. But I would’ve had the choice.
“I didn’t mean to… mess with you or something. I just wasn’t in a good mood, I guess.”
“What’re you saying, Carson?” I asked, elbowing him in the arm a little bit and smiling.
He gave an exasperated, over dramatic sigh. “I’m sorry I called you a bitch. You are not a bitch, and you’re actually a pretty cool little sister.” There he goes again. He throws around the word little like a child throws out a bad hand of cards. I couldn’t remember a time when I didn’t have a comeback.
“I’m approximately the same height as you, actually.” I’d used that one before, but it was the one he hated the most.
“You don’t have to rub it in my face that I’m short.”
“You don’t have to rub it in my face that I’m younger than you.”
Carson sighed and shook his head, smiling. “So we’re good, right?”
“I guess.”
“Nothing you wanna talk about?”
Yes. I wanna tell you everything. And I want you to tell me that it’s all going to be fine. Mom and dad’ll be fine. Our family will be fine. You’ll be fine.
I’ll be fine.
“No, I’m good. Thanks, though.”
“No problem.”

Stupidest things I've done for my writing
- begging my friend to re-enact the movements of a fight scene to see if it made sense
- making every facial expression I write to make sure it made sense
- spent a month researching the brains of murderers
- compiled every single Pirates of the Caribbean song from the soundtrack onto one playlist
- stayed up for almost three nights in a row (last three nights if NaNoWriMo 2017)
- tried to make myself cry to see if tears actually tasted salty
- Googled videos of people underwater so I could understand how hair moves underwater
- spent like 8 days trying to title a book
- made a spreadsheet of every event that happened to my character in his childhood and every event that happened to my other character in their story so they could have the same amount of chapters
- stopped writing for a month to actually read some crap in my genre
- asked my sister to say something embarrassing about me in front of my mom so I could write embarrassment better (pro tip: never ever do that)
6 & 32
6. Single or multiple POV?
Single is fine, but having 2 or 3 points of view sometimes holds reader's interest, allows people to have favorite characters, and I like it more!!
32. Most difficult character to write
In This Never Happened, it's probably Nora. She has really bad anxiety and it's somewhat similar to mine, and it's very difficult and different to channel a lot of those feelings I have about anxiety and coming out into her story.
