So i have the tendency to sit outside and burn incense in this big oak chair that my dad made when I’m bored or just don’t want to be inside, today I went outside to my chair and I saw that there were four random incense sticks on the ground at the chair. They look exactly like my normal dragons blood incense except that they are different lengths and thickness... no one else burns incense in this area, and they definitely aren’t mine

18. A memorable meal this year?

From a purely culinary standpoint this is a buckwild answer, but it’s about the Emotions Attached, because it was a lunch from KFC lmao.

KFC has always been my mom’s favorite fast food, but with 5 kids, 3 of whom were picky eaters, it was never a great option in terms of family dinners. Plus, the only KFC was about 45 minutes away, and considering most of the kids played various sports, there was never any time to get it. But sometimes, when my mom was at her absolute limit, she would just Snap and be like “you know what? I’m getting KFC tonight. Fuck it” and she would pick up one of the kids from whatever practice they were at, drive 45 minutes to get that KFC, and come home with a giant bucket of fried chicken like “if you don’t like it, have some leftover pasta. I don’t give a shit” and then she would be like “also? I’M picking the movie tonight. i don’t care if you don’t want to watch it. we’re watching Jingle all the Way!” And, like, she was never mean about it? It wasn’t like we were suddenly frightened of mom because she let loose and got all authoritative? Like, we very much understood that when mom went and got KFC, it was because she was going through it, and those were some of my favorite nights! Because we’d gather around and make fun of whatever movie she picked, because it was usually terrible, and the older I get, the more important it feels that we all kind of like...understood that we were helping her just by not being little monsters for a night when she needed us to be cool.

Anyway, I didn’t mention any of that to my mom when I invited her over and ordered some KFC, but she’d just visited her sister in the locked ward where her sister lives, and she could only meet her briefly in the lobby, and her sister still doesn’t fully understand what’s going on with the whole covid thing and why we can’t visit her anymore. And I knew my mom was Going Through It, so I invited her over, and we sat outside on my back deck, and it was chilly but it was nice to hang out, just the two of us. In non-Covid times, we do it a lot! But this year has been different, and it was really nice to feel normal for a bit.

And then, when she left, I checked her Snapchat story and saw that she had taken a picture of me while I was looking down at my food and laughing a little bit, and she captioned it with “all is right with the world!” and, listen, i know 100% she was probably mostly talking about the KFC, but I’m sure it was nice to hang out with me too lmao
