Cam and Noel’s chemistry is still so fucking electric

We saw it before, time and time again, and it obviously hasn’t dissipated over the time that Noel was gone. 

Honestly, one of my main problems with Ian having other love interests is that Cam is a mediocre actor at best. To be really good, he needs a great actor like Noel to carry the scene and pull good acting out of him. 

And since both Elliot and Jeff are mediocre actors as well, neither of them could achieve that level of chemistry with Cam. Noel was/is the only one who can. 

So anyways, Noel is a superior actor to all of them,  Trenever and Faileb can both still choke, Mickey Milkovich is still my precious child, and I’m emotional.

I wanted to know ur opinion on the Caleb and Ian first date and wedding date where everyone seem to think that Ian trash talked his n Mickey's reship. Personally I didn't c it that way. I mean what other examples could he have used? What's ur take?

Luckyshaz, I’m glad you asked! What better way to spend an afternoon stuck in house because of total public transportation lockout, than analyze Caleb and Ian’s shitty relationship? Here goes! Under the cut because it became longer than expected. I’m a terrible person.

Okay, before going to the first date, I have to talk about their softball interactions in 6x05.

After Ian starts a gigantic fight with the gay cops because he was probably veeeeery bored with softball, and preferred exchanging punches and kicks by far, he makes a move with Caleb and tells him he wants the d. Caleb responds with:

“Is that what this is to you? A fuck?” And Ian replies.

“You’re saying it like it’s a bad thing.”

Guys this exchange is soooo important. Because Caleb gets all grossed out and hurt, so much that he starts walking away and tells Ian he’s immature for wanting to fuck without knowing each other. Like everyone hooks up in the same way. Like his way of hooking up is the only right way.

 But Ian? Remember how he and Mickey started hanging out? Yes, exactly. They fucked. So, even if Ian had no intention of starting a relationship with Caleb (but hey, he probably had no intention of starting a relationship with Mickey either, it just happened), he honestly thought there was nothing bad in fucking without any real feelings involved - and, honestly? Are we still in a time where casual sex is condemned?

Caleb could have just told him “Look, I’m not into casual sex. I gotta know my men before I stick my dick in them”. But no, instead he had to accuse Ian of being immature, he had to preach Ian, he had to tell him he was wrong and he made a mistake! This is called manipulation, ladies and gentlemen, because then Ian felt guilty and accepted to go on a date with him. So he already kinda lost a lot of brownie points imo.

But let’s get to the date!

First of all, we got Ian asking for advice to Lip, telling him he never went on a date with Mickey and all the other guys in his love life. Oh yes, we know he and Mickey never got to that Sizzler’s date. But what’s important here is to notice that Ian was the one asking Mickey out on a date, so in that case, Ian did want to go out on a date. But it was after four years of relationship, more or less. I think Ian sees a date as something very intimate, because it is spending time with a person that you know and love. Going on a date with someone you don’t know might get uncomfortable for him - and in fact, that’s exactly what happens with Caleb. 

And it’s not like Ian is uncomfortable because he’s never done this before - he’s uncomfortable because he feels like Caleb has expectations and will be judging him - and he’s right. Since he already ‘disappointed’ Caleb by asking him to have sex, he doesn’t want to disappoint him again, and it makes him nervous. Then Caleb orders, and goes ahead with some questions which are fun for me to analyze.

“You seem like a pensive kind of guy. You an only child?”

This is funny, because Caleb is right to say Ian is pensive - I mean, more like quiet and introverted - but the truth is that when you’re a middle child, sometimes you don’t have room to speak your mind, you’re not heard, not seen, and you have to fight even just to remind people that you exist. This is why Ian is ‘pensive’: since, like I’ve already written in another meta, his vulnerability makes him ‘give up’ on life and on himself, growing up, he learnt to keep his words and his feelings to himself, sometimes even hiding them from himself. 

So, after Caleb tries to get him to talk about his family and rolls his eyes at Ian’s difficulty to do so, Ian gets defensive and here comes the Mickey bash.

“Look, I have no idea what I’m doing. My last boyfriend wasn’t much of a talker, his idea of a conversation was to insult me a bunch and then punch me right before we banged.” 

Ian tries to avoid Caleb’s judging by blaming Mickey for his inadequacy. He will do the same thing to Caleb with Trevor in S7. But the truth is, Ian isn’t much of a talker either. He smiled when Mickey insulted him, because he didn’t live it like an aggression. And do I have to remind you of the fist fight he started at the softball field? He likes to fight, he grew up fighting with Lip all the time as a game, he likes being rough, but to gain Caleb’s empathy, to gain Caleb’s approval, he’s saying it like it’s a bad thing. (get the reference)

Also, a little observation: Ian is mentally ill and gets no help whatsoever, which makes him confused about who he is, and who he wants to be. Having a solid identity allows you to be sure of your choices - who you want to be with, what you want to do for living. These choices are hard to take when you don’t clearly know who you are. Ian thought he was a soldier for a long time, and the bipolar messed up everything. He’s lost. This is why it’s so easy to influence him and manipulate him and change him. Of course, there are people who think that this is just how Ian is, this is part of his personality - most of these people don’t like Ian for what he did to Mickey. I prefer to think that when one gets sick during adolescence (when your identity develops and forms), one loses their image, their identity, and it’s hard to find it again with no professional help. But it’s a very complicated discussion, and I’m in no place to say where the bipolar ends and Ian begins.

Okay so Caleb dashes out on the date, and Ian asks him to go with him because Ian is the guy for action. But let’s skip this and go directly to the wedding, since I’ve already talked. Like, too much. Too damn much. Y u keep asking my opinion guys I AM ANNOYING MYSELF. 

Well, even though Caleb denies it, I do think he invited Ian to the wedding as a gay prop. Fortunately, Ian likes to be watched, and has been the victim or way more serious gay bashing, so despite the initial justified anger against Caleb, he works things out and does that sexy sexy dance. But first, the second Mickey reference - which I don’t consider a bash this time though. 

“The only wedding I’ve ever been to was when my closeted boyfriend had to marry this pregnant hooker that he was forced to fuck at gunpoint, so… this isn’t so bad.”

Although Caleb laughs, and it’s pretty disgusting for him to do so (even though he didn’t know Ian was present, and was forced to watch the whole thing, which was traumatic as well - I mean, we’re talking about rape, what the hell), I also see some positive things here: Ian doesn’t act like Mickey had a choice in it. (Which means, in the end, he doesn’t blame Mickey for his marriage to Svetlana). He says Mickey had to marry the hooker, after he was raped. So he considers what happened rape, and he doesn’t really laugh about it. His smile is a sort of auto-ironic smile, something like ‘can you believe the crazy shit I’ve been involved in? Sometimes, me neither’. I don’t think it was the right moment to bring it up - I don’t like that Caleb didn’t take it seriously, and I am pretty certain that when Ian thinks about that event, he still feels like shit. It was a horrifying experience for both - but I think Ian and Mickey overcame it together when Mickey came out and they literally fought with his father once more. And this time, they won.

So I don’t think Ian’s intent was to joke on it - Caleb could have reacted some other way, and maybe he would have discovered a whole other side of Ian. A side that he probably never knew because he never seriously gave a fuck about him. 

I will conclude this post by saying that after the wedding, there’s an exchange between Caleb and Ian that fairly summarizes the relationship for me.

Caleb: -awkward- So, huh… what do we do now?

Ian: -resigned- …Whatever you want, I guess.

The Caleb-Trevor pattern

Like I’m rewatching season 6 right now and... I’m sorry but I see too many similarities between Caleb/Ian and Trevor/Ian. It’s like the writers didn’t even try to change the dynamics. 

1) Ian approaches both in the hope of a quick fuck. Ain’t gonna happen tho. In Caleb’s case, because Caleb is fancy and wants to have a fancy date which is gonna go terribly - and in Trevor’s case, because Ian is not so inclined to have a quick fuck when he finds out Trevor is trans - and let me add that this is perfectly okay, because having a sexual preference for cock does not equal to transphobia (also this doesn’t change the fact that yes, Ian used the wrong words with Trevor and behaved transphobicly).

2) Both men think they have to teach Ian how to behave/what to do - both men control Ian’s thoughts and actions to a certain extent. I can’t stress out how important this is.  Caleb topped all of his S6 pretentious behavior with his S7 bullshit - he actually wanted to teach Ian how cheating on your boyfriend with a woman is totally normal and not cheating at all. But even before that, he complained about Ian being an introvert, and demanded that he’d go through gay bashing from his father at the wedding, without even apologizing. Trevor, on the other hand, didn’t do much until last week’s episode, when he made fun of Ian for not wanting to have sex with him after having drunk kissed the night before, and ignoring Ian’s very valid doubts about how would sex with a trans man work out (since he likes cock and hates vagina).  Of course, with Trevor the relationship has just started, so I don’t wanna bring it down too much - but so far, I see a very clear pattern of two men who make Ian feel like he is wrong. They don’t validate him, and they assume he has no real opinions on things only because he doesn’t share them. 

3) Ian bashing on his ex’es to justify his “wrong” behavior. This is a consequence to point number two. Since both Caleb and Trevor make Ian feel like he’s not behaving in a normal way, or the right way, the quickest way Ian has to protect himself from those critics (and bear in mind that Ian still has little to zero self-awareness) is to blame the people with whom he’s been in a relationship. But this also means that Ian, to some extent, is twisting his own emotions, the emotions he felt at the time, and unvalidating them, which is dangerous. I mean, we saw the effect that had on Ian’s behavior with Mickey in the last two episodes of gallavich we had. 

4) Ultimately, Ian has to change himself to be in the relationship - which doesn’t necessarily mean to ‘grow up’. With Mickey, Ian grew up. He learnt what it meant to fight for someone, to fight for the love of someone. He learnt what it meant to forgive and not to forgive. And could have learnt so many more things, if Mickey hadn’t gone to jail.  With Caleb, Ian learnt... what exactly? That he’s a 100% gay?  With Trevor, Ian could definitely grow up, and I hope he does - but I’m just really worried that, once again, Ian is gonna convince himself that he wants to do something he really doesn’t wanna do, and instead of building a solid identity, he will just keep losing himself even more.

I felt like shameless has ruined the name Caleb for me, and they're gonna ruining Trevor next.

They kinda have for me too. Tbh, I don’t know any Calebs irl, but it’s always seemed like a douche’s name for some reason. But I think both of those names were so intentional. They’re both so all-American, yuppy, good natured frat boy names. I think the name Caleb for sure was supposed to be in contrast to the rough and tumble connotations of the name Mickey (like how everything about Caleb was so blatantly anti-Mick). If I was to guess, I think they are doing something similar with Trevor. They could’ve given him a more unique name (like other new characters named Sierra and Delores). But they chose Trevor, which to me evokes this image of a sort of an all around pleasant Good Guy that doesn’t cause trouble.

ok so i like season 7 so far except a few things. i like fiona's storyline and lip's so far. maybe carl too, i didn't make up my mind. and the girl played by ruby modine seems interesting. the rest is shit so far. anyway what bothered me is that they can show an explicit scene with ian having sex with a woman but they couldn't show an explicit sex scene with mickey. just when i thought that i couldn't hate the writers more. for me it was a funny scene, i laughed my ass off cause he is like "100% gay" to quote him. faileb can finally fuck off and leave my ian alone thank god. i mean what the fuck was in his head? and i don't want to be mean but that woman was kinda gross. and what the fuck is with caleb? "if it would've been a guy, then it counts as cheating" bitch since when? cheating is cheating it doesn't matter if it's a man or a woman. get the fuck out
