Italian Doctors Fooled Nazis by Inventing This Fake Disease

In 1943, a team of ingenious Italian doctors invented a deadly, contagious virus called Syndrome K to protect Jews from annihilation. On October 16 of that year, as Nazis closed in to liquidate Rome’s Jewish ghetto, many runaways hid in the 450-year-old Fatebenefratelli Hospital. There, anti-Fascist doctors including Adriano Ossicini, Vittorio Sacerdoti and Giovanni Borromeo created a gruesome, imaginary disease.

“Syndrome K was put on patient papers to indicate that the sick person wasn’t sick at all, but Jewish” and in need of protection, Ossicini told Italian newspaper La Stampa last year. The “K” stood for Albert Kesselring and Herbert Kappler — two ruthless Nazi commanders.

The doctors instructed “patients” to cough very loudly and told Nazis that the disease was extremely dangerous, disfiguring and molto contagioso. Soldiers were so alarmed by the list of symptoms and incessant coughing that they left without inspecting the patients. It’s estimated that a few dozen lives were saved by this brilliant scheme.

The doctors were later honored for their heroic actions, and Fatebenefratelli Hospital was declared a “House of Life” by the International Raoul Wallenberg Foundation.

tomorrow is ramadan. your eating disorder will not magically disappear in ramadan.

allah will not hate you if you relapse in ramadan. be it that you faint or you binge, if you need to break your fast because of your eating disorder THEN YOU BREAK YOUR FAST.

You are not supposed to fast when you are sick. YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO FAST WHEN YOU ARE SICK. IT IS HARAM TO FAST IF YOU ARE SICK BECAUSE IT BRINGS HARM TO YOUR BODY. If you start feeling horribly sick and you know, you haven’t had sufficient suhoor or iftar for a few days or anything of the sort, it is okay to break your fast and even go to the hospital if you need to.

habaybi that have eating disorders, PLEASE take care of yourself during ramadan. It is a month of cleansing and forgiveness, so forgive yourself if you relapse. You can always redo your fast after ramadan.

Honestly, people with Eating Disorders shouldn’t fast, period. Fasting triggers every possible subcategory, be it anorexia, Bed or Bulimia. For the life of me I can’t understand how you guys insist on trying to fit together old religions’ traditions and self-care. Religions don’t give a damn about your eating disorders. You might want to rethink your priorities in life when you have to choose between self-care and following the rules of a book written by a man a thousand years ago.

And of course, this isn’t just about the Islamic religion. I could make a list three kilometers long with harmful behavior that the Christian religion promotes.

Everyone is free to follow the religion they want, but thinking that monotheistic religions leave you ‘free’ is being delusional. Religions (monotheistic) are institutions, historically born to control the masses. Tumblr, you are so politically correct, but you forget the basics of human rights. You fight against social norms, you fight against gender disparity, you fight against gender roles, but you don’t fight against the institutions that created these things in the first place?!

Thank you, my friend. Yes, it fucking sucks... mostly because I STILL don’t know which is the right way to go. It’s confusing. I mean, not to do stupid examples, but since I have a history of self-harm, that’s an easy one to solve. Self-harming: bad. Not self-harming: good. But... well, I guess starving myself and eating less than what I know I need, is kind of like self-harm? And I know for sure binging is self-harming, because often times you just do it until your stomache hurts so bad, and you know you’ll feel shit about it too.

But the reason you cut your calories is that you want to like your body... I know I want to like my body and unfortunately, in my mind, that still overlaps with being skinny - more than just being fit, since I am pretty fit already.

If I think that I’m never gonna be skinny, I just get super sad. People tell me all the time that I am “fine”, but it’s like my mind hears “you’re not skinny” instead. It’s hell on Earth. What the fuck.

Ah, thanks for the small occasion to rant. I hope I wasn’t too negative - I mean, I am working on it and at least it’s not as bad as it was. But it’s still a major problem keeping me from enjoying life as much as I could.

As someone with multiple bilingual friends where English is not the first language, may I present to you a list of actual incidents I have witnessed:

Forgot a word in Spanish, while speaking Spanish to me, but remembered it in English. Became weirdly quiet as they seemed to lose their entire sense of identity.

Used a literal translation of a Russian idiomatic expression while speaking English. He actually does this quite regularly, because he somehow genuinely forgets which idioms belong to which language. It usually takes a minute of everyone staring at him in confused silence before he says “….Ah….. that must be a Russian one then….”

Had to count backwards for something. Could not count backwards in English. Counted backwards in French under her breath until she got to the number she needed, and then translated it into English.

Meant to inform her (French) parents that bread in America is baked with a lot of preservatives. Her brain was still halfway in English Mode so she used the word “préservatifes.” Ended up shocking her parents with the knowledge that apparently, bread in America is full of condoms.

Defined a slang term for me……. with another slang term. In the same language. Which I do not speak.

Was talking to both me and his mother in English when his mother had to revert to Russian to ask him a question about a word. He said “I don’t know” and turned to me and asked “Is there an English equivalent for Нумизматический?” and it took him a solid minute to realize there was no way I would be able to answer that. Meanwhile his mom quietly chuckled behind his back.

Said an expression in English but with Spanish grammar, which turned “How stressful!” into “What stressing!”

Bilingual characters are great but if you’re going to use a linguistic blunder, you have to really understand what they actually blunder over. And it’s usually 10x funnier than “Ooops it’s hard to switch back.”

After a few years in the Flemish part of Belgium and a few Dutch lessons, I barely spoke/understood Dutch beyond typical/practical sentences for everyday life. I worked in an international environment where we spoke mainly English, but also with a lot of Dutch people and I could also speak my own mother tongue. One day at lunch I could not for the life of me remember the English word for Floor (as in story) and after a few tries had to say it in dutch (Verdieping) which I had never used in my life (but saw written on the elevator wall everyday) for my colleagues to translate back to English with amusement. Multilingual life is chaos on your brain. XD

I think my favorite multilingual moment might be the mom and 2 year old on the bus. She would ask him questions in Portuguese and he would answer in Dutch. And the most amazing thing was you could clearly see that for the 2yr old it was like they were speaking the same language, he couldn’t even tell it was different ones. The amazing flexibility of the young human brain.

I always make the mistake of putting prepositions at the end of italian phrases, which is something that english grammar does. Which results in me sounding like Yoda. Also, something that happens pretty often with similar words is messing up the vocals. Like, speaking italian and saying ‘rEstorante’ instead of ‘ristorante’ because in English it’s ‘rEstaurant’.

Plus, now that I’m studying Japanese as a third language, I’m starting to have a reflex for all the japanese listening I’ve been doing, and I go ‘mmmh’ ‘oooh’ ‘aaah’ whenever someone’s talking to me. Like, all the time. It does sound normal when Japanese people do it, tho, LOL.

Me: okay since fat loss is not working at 1400 calories im gonna try and go below 1000 calories for ten days to feel less gross with summer clothes my dad: ops I cooked 4 desserts today, but dont worry u don’t have to eat them all today, but if you don’t eat them you’re gonna feel guilty because cooking is my only way to express affection because I’m depressed

After all the harmful behaviors I’ve managed to change since I’ve been to therapy, I still have serious doubts that I am ever going to solve the food issue. I know it’s a matter of self-esteem, I know I’m lonely. Still. I don’t know the answer. Do I have to love myself even if I’m not skinny, or I will be able to become skinny when I will love myself enough to avoid overeating frequently? Will being skinny ever become unimportant to me? Ugh.
