After watching an episode of Modern Marvels; Failed inventions, I attempted to draw the floor plans of a two bedroom dymaxian house trying to figure out how to put bookshelves in. My only solution, make the central wall octagonal.

A British lawyer named James Puckle patented the first primitive 'machine gun' on this day in British history, 15 May 1718. The gun became known as the 'Puckle Gun,' and its inventor originally intended to use it for fishing, oddly enough. At the time of its patent, however, the design was beyond what was technologically possible, and the gun quickly gained a reputation for being unreliable and problematic. It did not become popular, and one newspaper sarcastically observed, following the business venture's failure, that the gun has "only wounded those who hold shares therein."
Exactly one hundred years ago, a tailor named Franz Reichelt jumped off of the Eiffel Tower to show off his homemade parachute... The entire disaster was filmed, and it's probably the eeriest thing I've ever seen.
