I think I like new bad things for the same reason I like everclear (band complains about the scene while the rest of the scene complains about band)

city of subarus--this used to be a lot higher and it’s the only one I’m still conflicted about, I consider it a floating variable (1998)
every scene needs a center--I know a lot of you love this one a lot and I’m still willing to have my mind changed but it hasn’t happened for me yet (2007)

anyway “secretly minnesotan” is literally about brooke @prettylittlecrier (and me)
“meet me in las vegas” is a bad song about vegas but it’s one of my favorite songs about vegas because I imagine it as a song about vegas by someone from washington who only ever got to go to reno
I always say disenchanted hearts isn’t one of my faves per se even though two of my three favorite tullycraft songs are on it (”our days in kansas” and “secretly minnesotan,” of course) because my heart lies with provincial lo-fi postgrunge tullycraft first forever. but that record does its sound well (and it’s not my favorite sound when other twee bands do it) and I think it’s one of their more conceptually tight records with a nice balance of difficult ideas and accessible ideas. I don’t think a younger sean could have pulled off something like khrushchev’s ekranoplan had failed those weeks in august never seemed fair our love was left to sink or sail you cut the summer blonde from your hair
most of all because this record benefits from a distance from the nineties most of the other records don’t have, which allows it to succeed at tullycraft’s central project (jokes about the nineties)
not a 90s song but a song about the 90s by a 90s band: our days in kansas wouldn’t last, we never learned the KU fight song
