Do I? | Cosima and Katherine AU
“Ms. Cosima.” Cassandra, the 16 year old’s handmaid, walked in her room without knocking and went to open the curtains. “It’s time to get up. You have a big day ahead of you.” Cosima threw a pillow over her head and groaned as the light hit her. It was probably only about 7am, and it was already too bright outside for her liking. Cassandra went to the large walk-in closet and began looking for a dress to put Cosima in. “Don’t act like that, miss. You’re parents wanted you up early.” She glanced back at Cosima as she rolled out of bed and lazily made her way to a chair in front of her boudoir. “And I’ve been told we have to fix your hair.” She turned back to the closet and pulled out a long and poofy dress.
Cosima groaned again as she eyed the dress. It was a deep burgundy color, tight at the top with three quarter length sleeves, and fanning out into what resembled a cupcake starting at her waist. Strings of pearls roped their way around the skirt in intricate designs. She would have to wear heels. She hated heels. “You have got to be kidding me.” She rolled her eyes. “What is the point in all this? Why make such a big deal about this? If I’m going to marry this girl then she’s going to see me when I first wake up, and with my hair done, not left down, unlike my parents would like.”
Her handmaid hung the dress over the bar of the canopy over Cosima’s head and went to her, beginning to fiddle with her hair and take it out of the dreadlocks. She threw her head back and let out a whine. “Cassssiiiiiieeeeee. Don’t do this to me.” Cassandra pushed her head back up and continued pulling at her hair.
“It won’t be that bad, miss.” She put a small smile on her face. “At least your parents said that you could do your own makeup.”
Cassandra spent the next hour preparing Cosima to meet her future wife. She pulled her hair out of the dreads and brushed it straight, letting it fall flat and hit her lower back. It wasn’t often that her parents let her wear her hair down. It normally had to be in some sort of updo. She wondered why they were letting her wear it down today. She did her own makeup and let Cassandra help her don the red dress, a large petticoat under the skirt to make it poof out. She slipped into pearl colored heels and went downstairs.
Her parents were in the dining room, huddled into each other talking in whispers. They looked up when she entered. She had never really been close to her parents. She thought of Cassandra as more of a mom than her own birth mother. Things didn’t change today. She was given a nod of approval and dismissed, left on her own to go meet the woman she was to marry. The woman that she had never met before, didn’t know anything about, but would bring her parents happiness because it would form a bond between their two kingdoms. The only thing she knew about it all was that Katherine’s parents wanted to gain a relationship with Cosima’s kingdom and parents. So, they had asked to have Cosima’s hand in marriage.
Cosima walked across the foyer and stepped through the double doors into the ballroom, taking a deep breath as she prepared herself to interact the woman who had traveled such a distance to meet girl she was to marry in less than a month.
