A locked door is rarely the interesting part. The interesting part is what opening it will cost. Declared Risk is a compact 5e subsystem for scenes where failure should reshape the situation instead of stopping play. Before an important Ability Check, the DM states the intent, the DC, and the consequence. The player can then prepare better, narrow the objective, accept a smaller success, or take the risk as framed. On a success, the intent is achieved. A failure by 1–4 still produces progress, but with a cost. A failure by 5+ triggers the full consequence and introduces immediate pressure.
