The Real Cost of a Holiday Booth
The Real Cost of a Holiday Booth
Last week, we exhibited our Tastes of Idaho products in a holiday booth at a local fair. We have done lots of shows in the past — mostly kiosks in the Mall — but this is the first time in a few years that we have done a show booth (Actually, the event was sponsored by our church).
We spent Friday afternoon setting up, Saturday at the show, and Sunday afternoon, taking the booth down … Close to…

INTERSTATE FAIR TO HAVE MISSIONARY BOOTH
"The long-time ambition of many members will be realized in September of 1967 when the Spokane District sponsors a missionary and public relations booth at the Spokane Interstate Fair. Authorization for the project was voted at the spring conference of the district. The Spokane area branches will not sponsor a restaurant concession at the fair as they have for some years, thus releasing many members to assist in the public information booth. More than 150,000 people from all over the Inland Empire attended last year's fair. This year the event will be held fro September 9 through 17.
Arrangements have been made for Seventy Charles Vreeland, missionary for the Boise District, to assist Spokane District personnel in this important and sensitive public contact opportunity. Brother Vreeland had several years of experience with church booths at large fairs when he was missionary in the Sacramento area and assisted with the large and successful booth sponsored by the Sacramento and neighboring districts for several years at the California State Fair."

CHURCH FAIR BOOTH WINS BLUE RIBBON
Seventy Charles Vreeland, Gladys Porter & Wayne Winters
From the Spokane District Telegram Oct. 1967
The Spokane District's first experiment with a booth at the Spokane Interstate Fair in September won a first prize blue ribbon for the "commercial division". (It was so classified because it required paid exhibit space, as contrasted to the exhibits of flowers, produce, animals and other subjects of competition.)
The booth was decorated in an attractive and dignified manner fitting its purpose. Open on two sides, it featured a painting of Christ in the corner, flanked by attractive gold-tone 11" x 14" photographs illustrating seven sacraments and ordinances: baptism, confirmation, ordination, marriage, communion, laying on of hands for healing and blessing of infants. These photographs were furnished by Evangelist Marion PEASE of Des Moines, Iowa, and locally enlarged and mounted. Each picture was labeled and had an appropriate scripture from the King James version of the Bible referring to the ordinance illustrated.
A small table covered with a pulpit cloth with the church seal had the tree standard books of the church and a display of available tracts on various distinctives of the church.
Centered in the open corner of the booth was a beautifully-built model church, constructed by Henry REHDER, with a pulpit, pews, lights, glass windows, tiny picture of Christ behind the pulpit and door which opens. Each window and building block was labeled by Jim TAYLOR with the distinctive elements of the Restored Church, based on the traditional missionary chart and familiar tract, "I Will Build My Church". The model was mounted on a plaster of paris rock of revelation.
An attractive folder was prepared giving a statement of our beliefs and a directory of Inland Empire churches. Other tracts and copies of the Restoration Witness were on hand to give to inquirers.
Seventy Charles VREELAND of Hagerman, Idaho, who is now sharing time between the Boise and Spokane Districts, was in charge of operation of the booth and spent most of the time the fair was open, from 9:00 a.m. to midnight daily for nine days, meeting visitors to the booth. He was assisted by various priesthood members and hostesses from the Spokane branches.
Committee members Barbara CURTIS, Del LAWRENCE, Jack WORTHINGTON, Paul WORTHINGTON and Bob WILKINSON headed various sub-committees responsible for preparing the many details of the fair booth and carrying out the project. The tree Spokane branches each had two special offerings to raise funds in addition to those remaining in the district treasury for this project. Numerous Spokane county members assisted in the project. Paul BRIGGS, of Briggs Electric Co., loaned the special spotlights which gave so much depth and color to the photographs of the ordinances.
A total of 1,379 persons visited the booth during the fair. Of these 411 took publications or tracts and 94 discussed the gospel and the beliefs of the church with attendants. Several opportunities for follow-up ministry were made available. Part of the costs of the booth involved stocks of printed materials, a considerable quantity of which will be available for use at future fairs or in other public relations or missionary activities of congregations in the district.
