NYC's shoebox apartments may get even smaller

As if New York City apartments weren’t small enough, Mayor Michael Bloomberg launched a contest on Monday searching for proposals for studio apartments between 275 and 300 square feet, big enough to fit just one or two people.

The initiative seeks to address the city’s housing shortage and its changing demographics. Currently New York City has 1.8 million one- and two-person households, but only one million studios and one-bedrooms, according to a city press release about the contest. If a 275 square foot studio is hard to believe, check out this 78 square foot Manhattan studio apartment which rents for $800 a month.
