Election Day 2018

Election Day is likely my favorite day of the year, especially this year. The gubernatorial candidates were in a statistical dead heat, so Connecticut received a lot of attention. I did interviews in local and international media outlets discussing women candidates, the governor’s race, poll results, election laws, voter behavior, and the Federal Election Commission’s rulings, among others. Alumnae from Ready to Run CT, a nonpartisan women’s political leadership program, ran for various positions across the state. I provided the legislature’s Elections Committee and the State of CT Elections Enforcement Commission with research on election laws, turnout, and women in politics.

Since the 2000 election, how we administer elections is a large part of the ongoing national dialogue. In dealing with long lines to malfunctioning voting machines, our state and local governments are trying to make voting more efficient. Fairfield undergrad and MPA students, in tandem with others from across the country, went to local polling places on Election Day and collected data for a groundbreaking study on wait times and line length at the polls. The data collected by students helps us understand this aspect of the voting experience and offer viable solutions, and their research from 2016 has yielded one published paper and one under review.

Lastly, no Election Day is complete without a results show. I was thrilled to be part of the Election Night program on WICC Live, broadcast from Bridgeport, CT.Fairfield politics students were there updating results and providing me and the host with timely information.

What I love the most about election season are all the ways students can engage beyond the classroom. Whether they are participating in campaign internships, events on and off campus, or field research, they are paving the way for Fairfield University to be the leader in reporting on and analyzing state and local politics. They show us what it means to be educated at a Modern Jesuit Institution.
