Act 2 - Scene 12
It’s early evening. Carrie has just learnt that her dear beloved Lady Muck was aboard the P&O Fairstar when it went down somewhere in the Pacific. Beside herself, Carrie runs to Muck Manor thinking only of her beautiful Lady missing and feared dead. Carrie burdens the fact Lady never knew the love Carrie shared for her, as she is filled with loss, hope and despair, Carrie begins to cry.
(to the tune of I Honestly Love You - Olivia Newton John)
Carrie Maybe I shouldn’t be here I wasn’t sure if I could Without you, I’ve got nowhere else to go But I’m so lost without you Lady, you made my life so good But I believe you deserved to know
I loved you Lady Muck, I honestly loved you
I wish you could answer Just to look in your eyes Maybe it was better left unsaid But you were pure and simple And I finally realize That it's coming from my heart now that you’re dead
I loved you Mucky, I honestly loved you (sobs)
(spoken) No.. No..
I'm not giving up on you, my Mucky Moo I'm not giving up on you, at all And I’ll pray to god to keep you safe everyday And I won’t stop the search til I’ve got the chance to say
I love you My Muck, I honestly love you
If we both were born In another place and time This moment might be ending in a kiss But I refuse to mourn To take you was crime So I guess I'd better leave it at this
I loved you Goodbye my Muck, I honestly love you
I honestly love you
The door to Muck Manor closes, as Carrie leaves with her heart torn in two.
Act 2 - Scene 11
Muck’s screams subside, the water begins to calm once again. The sea is scattered with traces of their presence, the P&O Fairstar is gone. Draped over a broken plank, Captain Morgan slowly wakes, he looks around the water; bodies from his ship are few and far between. He can’t find her, the woman he desperately didn’t want to lose
Captain Morgan: MUCK?! LADY MUCK???
When there’s no reply, Captain Morgan crumbles under the weight of total despair. Captain then here’s a muffled gargle..
Lady Muck: Mor-ghan... He-ere...
Captain spins around to see his Lady like a whale surfacing, he dives in to help her to the plank. They both sing onto the plank, exhausted from the recent horror. Captain turns to Lady Muck.
Captain Morgan: I thought I'd lost you, my beautiful Lady.
Lady Muck stares blankly into his eyes, the Captain begins to sing. {Stage direction: Stage is empty, backdrop is an ocean blue, it's sunset/early evening. The plank the two lovers share slowly drifts across the stage throughout the song.
(to the tune of Endless Love– Lionel Richie)
Captain Morgan My love, there's only you in my life, The only thing that's right.
Lady Muck My first love, you're every breath that I take, You're every step I make.
Captain Morgan And I (Lady Muck: I-I-I-I-I)
Captain Morgan I want to share
Both All my love with you
Captain Morgan (gestures to the empty waters) No one else will do…
Lady Muck And your eyes
Captain Morgan Your eyes, your eyes
Both They tell me how much you care Ooh yes, you will always be My endless love
Two hearts, Two hearts that beat as one Our lives have just begun
Lady Muck Forever (Captain Morgan: Ohhhhhh)
Both I'll hold you close in my arms I can't resist your charms
Lady Muck And love
Captain Morgan Oh, love
Both I'll be a fool For you, I'm sure
Lady Muck You know I don't mind
Captain Morgan Oh, you know I don't mind
Both 'Cause you, You mean the world to me Oh
Lady Muck I know
Captain Morgan I know
Both I've found in you My endless love
Captain Morgan Oooh-woow
Both Boom, boom Boom, boom, boom, boom, booom Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom Oooh, and love
Captain Morgan Oh, love
Both I'll be that fool For you, I'm sure
Lady Muck You know I don't mind
Captain Morgan Oh you know –
Both I don't mind And, YES You'll be the only one 'Cause NO one can deny This love I have inside And I'll give it all to you My love My love, my love My endless love
The two embrace passionately as they sink onto the plank. Lady Muck gives herself to Captain Morgan and the lights fade as they make love.
Act 2 - Scene 8
Onboard the P&O Fairstar. The ship’s horn sounds. Lady Muck is taking a turn around the first class deck, parasol in hand to shield her fair complexion from the blazing afternoon sun. She smiles sweetly and greets the other passengers as she passes them, but her pleasant demeanour hides her confusion and worry. Carrie, after all, is not on the ship. Lady Muck stops to gaze wistfully out across the waves, a gloved hand resting lightly on the railing. After a few moments she reaches into her clutch and pulls out a silver cigarette case. Removing one, she holds it to her lips and turns to a passing passenger.
Lady Muck: Good sir, could I trouble you for a light?
Sir: Why certainly my dear.
He lights Muck’s cigarette and she inhales deeply.
Lady Muck: Thank you.
The gentleman moves away. As Muck is enjoying her second drag two children, a young boy and girl, both aged around 10 and dressed in clothes more commonly seen in the steerage classes, come running in. They are engrossed in a game of tag and squealing with delight. Some of the other passengers tut disapprovingly from their deck chairs. Muck however, smiles widely at their youthful exuberance. Suddenly the girl trips and falls. She starts to cry loudly. The boy stops running and moves to her side, trying to calm her, all the while looking warily around him. Lady Muck rushes over.
Lady Muck: Goodness me, you poor thing. Are you alright?
The girl looks up into Muck’s concerned face and starts to cry harder. The boy clamps his hand over the girl’s mouth.
Boy: She’s peachy. Please don’t rat on us lady. We woz only playing is all.
Lady Muck (bemused by the youthful slang): Rat on you?
Boy: Tell the purser we’re ‘ere! We’re not s’posed to be ‘ere see.
Lady Muck: Well I wouldn’t dream of doing such a thing! (she turns her attention to the girl) Now what do I have to stop those tears…
Lady Muck rummages in her clutch.
Lady Muck: Ah ha!
She pulls out a cigarette and hands it to the girl, who accepts it and exchanges a puzzled look with the boy.
Boy (holding out his hand): Can I have one too?
Lady Muck: Of course you may. You know, whenever I’m feeling sad there are a few things that are always guaranteed to put a smile back on my face.
Both children (wide eyed): What?
Lady Muck: Well, let me tell you…
(to the tune of A Spoon Full of Sugar – Mary Poppins)
If I’m ever feeling blue There’re a few things I turn to. A drink. A smoke. Occasionally a toke. Because…
A drag on a cigarette turns a frown upside down A frown upside down Frown upside down Have a couple of gin and tonics and we’ll go paint the town And finish with fat kebab.
Both children are on their feet now, grinning with fags in mouths. Muck leans over an old man in a deck chair.
A man who’s feeling quite depressed Can see his life as one big test No wonder he will constantly feel down If he wants to feel less abused He should abuse some fags and booze Some say they’re a vice, but they’re really rather nice.
Muck pushes a cigarette between the old man’s lips and he leaps up. The two begin to dance a jaunty Irish-style jig and the children join in.
Yes a drag on a cigarette turns a frown upside down A frown upside down Frown upside down Have a couple of gin and tonics and we’ll go paint the town Then finish with fat kebab.
The jig continues, as Captain Morgan enters. He stops and watches Lady Muck from behind a lifeboat, an admiring look on his face. Two pursers enter with silver trays of G&Ts, fags and kebabs which Muck distributes to all the people in the vicinity, crouching down to give the children theirs.
I’m not condoning harder drugs Or even sex before you wed But I feel so strongly that this should be said For with a fag between my lips From a full hip flask I will sip 'Cos when (The children echo: coz when) You’re drunk (The children echo: you’re drunk)
Together (pointing to the old man leaping about) Even that guy seems a hunk.
Girl (operatic style) I’m piiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiissed!
Lady Muck (hands on hips): Cheeky! Ok everyone, one last time …
All (dancing) For a drag on a cigarette turns a frown upside down A frown upside down Frown upside down Have a couple of gin and tonics and we’ll go paint the town Then finish with fat kebab! Hey!
As the group disperses, puffing away and guzzling their G&Ts, Lady Muck smiles down at the children.
Lady Muck: There, all better now?
The two children nod enthusiastically. Captain Morgan comes up behind Muck.
Captain Morgan: Excuse me madam. May I introduce myself?
The children scamper away upon seeing the Captain. Lady Muck turns around and is immediately taken aback by the handsome man in her midst.
Captain Morgan: My name is Captain Morgan. This is my ship and I must say I find it most agreeable to find a woman of your…proportions aboard it.
Lady Muck blushes and turns her head away shyly. She holds out her hand for the Captain to kiss.
Lady Muck: I’m Lady Muck. Delighted to make your acquaintance Captain.
Captain Morgan: Lady Muck, I wonder if you might do me the honour of accompanying me to tomorrow evening’s dinner dance. I can assure you there’ll be lashings of gin AND fags!
Lady Muck: Well in that case I might even let you try my kebab (she looks horrified) Did I just say that out loud?!
Captain Morgan (grinning and leaning into her): I look forward to it.
Captain Morgan strides away, leaving Lady Muck to twirl with excitement and run back in the direction of her cabin.
