Fairies AKA the Fae (p2)

In a previous post, we went over the mischievous little nature spirits known as Fairies, or The Fae.

In that post we discussed some fae lore and orgins. In this post we'll go over some basic fae work, this is if you wish to work with them or how to politely decline working with them.

Recap: Some lore say that fairies are beautiful while another lore says that they are ugly. However most of the lores found say that the fae do no like to be seen and will only be seen to those select few, so descriptions of the fae are scattered and far between.

When the fae wish to contact or work with someone they will begin to leave gifts. These gifts can be anything from little shinnies, flowers or mushrooms growing in ones yard, or even items being misplaced and then suddenly appearing somewhere else.

Now, if one does not wish to work with the fae it is encouraged that you deny, politely but do not use words such as "please" and "thank you" as these may confuse or anger the fae.

Even when one wishes to work with the fae they should be cautious when speaking with them as some words or phrases mean one thing to humans but another to the fae.

For example, giving your name to the fae is a huge no no as it's seen as actually giving them your name, thus rendering you nameless.

If you wish to allow the fae to know your name it's good to use a fake name or even a craft name.

Working with the fae can have some great benefits such as; if you own a garden then the fae may help it grow, like with crows giving them food may also result in them giving you gifts. In general, if you're kind to the fae, then the fae will be kind to you.

Whether or not you plan on working with the fae it's always in your best interest to be kind to them and the nature that they inhabit.

Hello there! I was just wondering if you knew how the Fae felt about gold/silver? I know they hate iron, but I haven’t been able to find anything relating to how they feel about gold or silver. Thank you!

Hello!Fae creatures tend to be fond of gold and silver from my experience and experiences I’ve heard from others, they also really enjoy gemstones and such precious/semi-precious things. ‘Pretty’ things in general tend to be quite appealing to them honestly, as long as there’s no iron involved.- Magpie.

Problem with house Fae. Maybe.....

So I might have finally tracked down the problem. I have been noticing that pairs of hand-knit socks have been getting lost over the past 2 years, since I moved into my current home.

It's not just one at a time either, it's complete washed pairs after I put them away. Most recently, it was two pairs of once. We did laundry a week ago and I air-dried the hand washed things, the next morning I folded them and put them away, all three pair of remaining ones. I was just packing to go on a trip, and I can't find my most comfortable pair now.

This brings the total lost pairs up to 5. I have one pair left.

This is ridiculous and super frustrating..... This is not the only thing that has disappeared, also my partner's confirmation cross will disappear sometimes for 8 or 9 months at a time. Decorative hair sticks don't last longer than a week or so, even though they're not worn.

I know that I have house fairies, generally I try to keep them well fed and respected. Having good house fairies as much like having good gut Flora: if you flush the entire system out, it puts the beneficial and the harmful on equal footing. That can cause increase conflict and discomfort.

At the same time, I want my comfy socks back! Any ideas?

A note on Fae

This is going to be prefaced with this is UPG. 

There are a lot of varying opinions when it comes to working with fae. They range from the extremes of “OMG! NEVER DO IT; THEY ARE DANGAROUSSSS” to “they are sweetness and will be wonderful.” Usually the answer is somewhere in between. Fae do not share the human ideas of morality, and can be dangerous to work with. 

The one thing I really haven’t seen addressed here is how dangerous it can be to ignore them if someone in your lineage dealt with faeries on the regular. 

Let’s say that there is a branch of your family that originates from a area with a very pronounced faery presence. Some of your ancestors would follow customs that would appease and protect them, but ONE of your ancestors decides to ask for a favor from the Fair Folk and creates a pact (either willingly or unwillingly). Now fae do not adhere to the human sense of time, thus this pact is actually linked to your bloodline. Fast forward to current generations and they have no idea about this pact, but weird things constantly happen, especially from a young age. You may experience things that seem to jump out of corners and then disappear, a feeling that you are being watched, uneasy feelings when in any woods that while it is dark, things constantly going missing then maybe reappearing in unlikely places, etc.; just general spookiness follows your family. This could be other bad things, but it could also be fae who are pissed that your pact is going unfulfilled. 

It doesn’t hurt to either use divination or have someone else make inquiries to see if this is the case. 

If you do feel this is the case, you could just try leaving offerings out and see if the spoopiness gets better. I’ve found that coffee creamer, shiny things, spring water, and faery symbols have worked. My son finds that leaving anything with glitter involved works. 

TL;DR If you think your ancestors had dealings with faeries, it is best not to ignore them now. They can make life very difficult
