PIA suspended in Europe over fake pilot licence scandal
Controllers have banned Pakistan International Airlines from the European Union for a half year after the state-run bearer grounded about 33% of its pilots for holding phony or questionable licenses, authorities said Tuesday.
The EU Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) told PIA ‘it is as yet not certain’ if all the rest of the pilots are appropriately qualified, and ‘they have lost their trust’ in the…

Alleged Fake Pilot Charged with Fraud
A French citizen has been charged with fraud in connection with his alleged attempt to pose as an Air France pilot at Philadelphia International Airport.
Philippe Jeannard, 61, of La Rochelle, France, is charged with one count of fraud in connection with an identification document.
According to court documents, when Jeannard boarded a commercial airplane March 20, 2013, he possessed a fraudulent Air France identification card belonging to his mother, a former Air France employee. Jeannard allegedly used that fraudulent identification card to gain access to the plane's cockpit.
Police say he was wearing an Air France shirt and had fake identification. They say he claimed to be a 747 pilot and made himself at home in the cockpit jump seat.
He was spotted by a gate attendant he had quarreled with earlier. He was apparently angry when he was turned down for an upgrade to first class.
If convicted, Jeannard faces a maximum sentence of five years in federal prison, three years of supervised release and a $250,000 fine.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney K.T. Newton, Eastern District of Pennsylvania.

This is enough to make me never want to fly again. Jesus Christ. How do airlines not know what different countries' licenses look like???
"I got the crackpot idea to apply as a co-pilot at a real airline so I made myself a Swedish flying permit with a logo out of regular white paper. It wasn't laminated, and looked like something I'd made at home. It was surprisingly easy. The documents look different everywhere in Europe. An Italian airline doesn't know what a Swedish licence looks like. And you can forge all the IDs you need. I'd train there for two or three hours at a time—at least 15 to 20 times over one and a half years."
